I have had both, they are both nice cameras, but the 50D is essentially a 40D and not worth the extra, thats why both times I got a 50 I went back to the 40!

Edit: I am probably seen as biased as my 40D is currently for sale but the above sentence are the facts!
 
Would like the micro adjust and higher res LCD without the extra mp

So its the 40D for me and good job really seeing as I have two of them

There's a lot more the 50d does that the 40d doesn't. There's a thread on here somewhere but the list is bigger than you'd think!

Whether or not you'd use it all is another matter.
 
The 50D adds:

-15MP
-Micro adjustment, which means that you can program each lens to adjust its focus, but I don't understand this, why would your lens be out of focus :S
-The screen is alot better for reviewing images.

Off the bat more people complained of noise on the 50D due to the pixels being more dense on the sensor but this I guess is down to how you use it. Considered a 60D??

Yeah it will be, thats just what I remember noticing from using both :D

So the EOS 50D essentially takes the 40D body and adds 5 extra Megapixels, a VGA screen, HDMI output, four times the sensitivity and a number of processing and interface enhancements. If you value these improvements, then it’s worth spending the extra or for existing owners to upgrade, but remember the body, viewfinder and AF are the same, so if you want a tough and quick semi-pro DSLR at a bargain price, the 40D remains a superb choice.

They are wrong about the AF, this is tweaked on the 50d, but those above are the main ones, like I inferred above, the other improvements are more subtle! But I think its something like this;

50d improvements over 40d;

* Faster processor (digic 4 over digic 3). One key factor for me - improves AF performance.
* More accurate AF - uses phase detect (as per 40d) and adds contrast detect for live view and face detect, if you want. Add the digic 4 to this.
* natural ISO up to 3200 (useable!)
* ISO expandable to 12,800 (at your peril, lol!)
* As mentioned AF adjustment
* Has in camera peripheral illumination correction (if you have a nasty vignetting lens!)
* ...and as mentioned the higher res screen (very nice it is too!).
* four levels of high ISO noise reduction (instead of off/on)

There are a few more minor tweaks, such as interface, creative shooting modes, auto lighting optimiser (dont use it!) and quick control screen but they wont make or break a camera.

For me the improved processing speed and AF was what made it for me as I do so much sports photography.

Dont get me wrong, I really rate the 40d, lovely camera, but if you have the money the upgrades on the 50d make it worthwhile IMO.

I was having this debate a month ago, their is a few noticeable improvements over the 40D but it came down to wether they were worth the extra money to me.

In the end i bought a 40D for £350 with less than 3000 shutter actuations in mint condition, it would of cost me another £150 to get the 50D. As it is i dont feel that ive missed out on anything that would improve my photography and i have the extra money in my pocket still.
 
Its best to think of the 50d as a tweaked 40d.

Then again the 20d was a tweaked 10d, the 30d a tweaked 20d, the 40d a tweaked 30d!! I see a pattern, no doubt people were asking the same things about the 40d vs 30d a while back! :)

Maybe thats why they tried to break the xxd pattern with the 60d?

The Canon tweaks are working then, as I own a 10d and 50d, and the total tweak list would be enormous between the two of them:D
I suppose it comes down personal tweak preference:thinking:
 
Theres been a lot of good tweaking over the years!
 
I have a 40D which I'm delighted with, but longed for a Canon upgrade. I wanted a better screen, more pixels and peripheral illumination to help the vignetting on my 15-85 lens! The 7D is way too expensive at the moment, the 60D not looking too bad after early reviews but still a little plasticky to me after using the 40D. Managed to find a mint 50D which comes on Tuesday. If I get a smidgen more resolution and half decent results at 1600/3200 when needed then I'll be happy.

I'm not fussed about video on a DSLR so this "upgrade" may be perfectly adequate for me.

This feature is actually one of the reasons I'm pondering upgrading from my 30D before I get a 5DmkII (or mkIII when it's out). Obviously not the only reason, as that'd be nuts :D

A good example would be the Sigma 50mm 1.4. This lens has a bit of a reputation for front/back focusing. With micro adjustments you can have a profile on the camera for this lens (or any other lens with this issue) to correct it.

It may work, but some lenses can be all over place, where no AF adjustment will help. Zooms can be very hard to adjust.

Overall, there is not much extra in 50D, and the smaller pixels in fact lead to more noise. 40D is OK with a saving of cash towards a good lens.
