40D Viewfinder AF?

I Have Just bought a Canon 40D from Beau on here.

When looking through the viewfinder it is all blurry and the green lights at the bottom are impossible to read. When I try to autofocus it is still blurry but manages to fire off the shots, when looking at the playback the image seems sharp but I have no way seeing through the viewfinder if its sharp before the shot :shrug:

Could this be a dirty mirror, my lack of knowledge for the 40D or is there something genuinely wrong?

Sorry to ask such a basic question, but I presume you've set the diopter to match your eyesight?
