40D wouldn't take images?

Hi guys,

When I got in from work this morning I grabbed the 40D to capture the sunrise. However, everything focussed but when I depressed the shutter, nothi g actually happened. No image was taken.

Is this a serious problem, expensive to fix?

Was there a memory card in the camera?
Are you certain it focussed correctly?
Was the lens properly attached and the aperture ring set to the correct setting so that the camera controlled the aperture (not sure if this applies to Canon cameras)?
Did the battery show a full charge?

It could be a simple error or it could be a catastrophic failure - so a bit more info perhaps?
 
Is there anything flashing in the viewfinder when you are trying to take a picture? If there is, it usually indicates that your settings need changing or that the camera hasn't been able to achieve focus.
 
My 50D does something similar. I have found taking the batteries out of the grip and then placing them back seems to do the trick. Its only happened twice, once in extreme cold and once in the wet!
 
Going on personal experience..

Check the timer isn't set
Check it is in Av mode (or whatever you use) and not something like A-DEP

If none of those are relevant
Is it showing any sort of error message on the screen?
 
Switch off, remove battery, replace battery, switch on, try again, anything then?
Sounds stupid but it happened to me with a 450D one time. Did the above and all was well and continued to be well for the further 9 months I owned the camera.

As above - this also happened to me once. The camera has power but no amount of button pressing had any effect. I tried everything and eventually playing with the batteries, grip (as in removing them and the grip completely for a while) worked on the 2nd/3rd attempt. I suspect that my grip was the issue but it works like a treat since. Persist with this for a while and see how you get on.
 
I had the same thing happen intermitantly for a while then eventually it started giving me the dreaded err99. I tried all the above and more but nothing heleped in the end I had it repaired, they replaced the shutter mechanism and said they suspected it had been dropped although it never had.
 
After taking the battery out it does seem to be a bit better, however I have since read up that the 40D have always had a shutter problem? Dust being the main cause?

How much would it be to send it in for a repair?
 
Think I remember a new shutter being about 180 quid altohugh if you are feeling brave there is an online guide to doing it yourself
Also read that electrical contact cleaner squirted in then the shutter button being twisted can sort it out

Reckon if it happens on my 70k clicks one I might have a go at the diy method, looked fairly straight forward and there is a video to folow on youtube
 
It cost me 250 quid from an authorised canon repair centre.
 
This is still happening, and it's causing me to press hard on the shutter, which is causing camera shake.

The camera has less than 8000 clicks, should it really be doing this? Plus I don't fancy spending 200 for a repair, I'd rather put that to a 7D.
 
There is an issue with the 40D and 50D shutter button sticking because of dust. Do a seach on here and on google.

I cant imagine it costing over £100.

Ring up Canon Elstree and get a quote.
 
I didn't fancy pouring a spoonful down the battery compartment, so I've just poured some directly on the shutter button, used a piece of kitchen roll to rub it in and twist the button, and now it's like new!
 
That's an expensive shot! I so hope they didn't just clean it with alcohol :lol:
