Hi All

Just bought a second hand Canon 40D manily for bird photography which I saw shall be combining with a Sigma 50-500 lens. This is a up grade from my humble 350D.
I was wondering if anyone can give me any tips for settings etc.

I have the camera set on AV currently with a ISO of 400 to hopefully catch the action.

Should be similar to the 350d, just with more MP and better quality shots, keep doing what you were before and if needed you can push the ISO further :)

Why should the 40D give better quality shots than the 350D when they have the same sensor?

The side-by-side comparison in the link below doesn't show a significant difference, other than higher ISO and more pixels. I would also agree that build quality is better with the 40D, but that shouldn't make any difference to image quality. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Same type of sensor, but the 40d uses digicIII and 14bit a/d converter compared to the 350d's digicII (and 12bit, if it is similar to the 30d).

They only had a comparison between a 400d and 40d in the 40d review but as the 400d was an upgrade to the 350d the quote should still be valid:

Despite sharing identical specifications (10.5 total megapixels, 22.2 x 14.8 mm) the EOS 40D's sensor does appear to be different (or at least its backend electronics) to the EOS 400D (Digital Rebel XTi) as it did manage to deliver lower noise and higher dynamic range

Get the focus on the AF-On button,set it at Cfn 4-2 ( that way it meters when the shot is taken not before) and you just hold down the AF-On button and it continually tracks focus,AI servo,High speed burst and use one of the custom function settings.
I found the combo of 40D and 50/500 very heavy (but I,m old) and a monopod or a tripod with a ball head set very loose,just to act as a support was very useful.

Definitely agree with using backbutton focussing, much easier to set up shots :)
 
I moved from a 350D to a 40D and the picture quality was noticeably better. The 350D was an older model with a 8mp sensor. Focussing is also better on the 40D with all cross point.
 
received my 40D yesterday after buying from russelsnr on here, i used a 400D before, i have had it out today to get used to the settings and focusing, and having downloaded the piccies i can see a noticeable difference between them, am very happy with it up to press

Many thanks for all of the advice. I will put it to good use.

For Alan, I paid £350 for mine with a fairly low shutter count and in great conidtion. To keep it that way I have bought some protective rubber covering off Amazon, only cost a tenner but gives a nice grip and provides some protection.

I bought the 350D back in 2006 and moved to the 40D this year.. Lovely camera and better all round for me.
