Hi all,

Im trying to get my head around which lenses I would need to replace (and suitable replacements) if I made the jump from my 40D to a 5Dii...

My current lens list is

Sigma 17-70
Sigma 10-20
Canon 55-250IS
Sigma 30mm1.4
Canon 50mm1.8

Am I right in saying that the first 3 lenses wouldn't fit, and would need replacements?

If so.... what replacements would fit?

With the 5D are you limited to only using L lenses?

Or would something like the Tamron 17-50 fit?

Its looking to be a very expensive move...

Not sure about the first 2 sigmas, but the 55-250IS is an EF-S lens so won't fit. You aren't limited to L lenses at all, the 70-300IS would be a possible replacement for the 50-250IS.

I think I'm right in saying that the Tamron 17-50 is for cropped sensor cameras and so would not fit, but you could try the well regarded Tamron 28-75

I think I am correct that the first 4 will either not fit or will vignette badly.
You are not restricted to L glass but an FF sensor needs good glass.
It might be worth looking for a used 24/105L and a used 70/200L,the non IS is a bit cheaper.
I have just done the same thing but to a 5Dc and need to get rid of my 10/20 and 30mm 1.4

You are going to have to get rid of the first 4 lenses, as per the posts above. The 5DII does need very good lenses so it may be worth considering if you can afford the camera and the lenses! For a standard lens you will be looking at something starting at 24mm and going to at least 70mm. Sigma and Tamron do versions but the Canon L lenses (yes lenses, not 'glass' :gag:) will most probably give the best results.

How do you find the 5Dc vs your 40D?

Its the high ISO performance of the 5Dii that appeals to me, a lot of people shoot at ISO1600 with no noise... on my 40D at ISO 1600 it is pretty noisy, and by 3200 (which on a 5Dii is also fine..) its pretty much a no-go zone!

double post/cross post time! I went from a 40D to 7D and have found the noise handling much better. I have shot at iso 6400 without too many problems and the noise was dealt with quiet happily in lightroom.

Ive read mixed feedback on the 7D noise performance.

Obviously the 7D is another option to my 40D upgrade, but part of me wants a 5Dii!

What kind of settings in LR do you use to elminate/reduce noise sufficiently at ISO 6400?

I can't remember off hand, sorry! I usually just fiddle until it looks right.

This photo is at 6400 in natural light, as are many of the others in that set. Sorry I can't post it directly here but I am at work and stuck with using ie6!

My current lens list is

Sigma 17-70
Sigma 10-20
Canon 55-250IS
Sigma 30mm1.4
Canon 50mm1.8

Yes. And the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 wouldn't fit either.

If so.... what replacements would fit?
The obvious replacement for the Sigma 17-70 would be the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS. It's often sold with the 5D in a kit and with good reason. They're very well suited to one another.

The best replacement for the Sigma 10-20mm would probably be the Canon EF 17-40mm f/4 L. Very nice landscape lens on full frame.

30mm focal length on a crop sensor isn't wildly off from 50mm on full frame. So if you switch body, your 50mm f/1.8 will do roughly the same job as your 30mm f/1.4 does now. If you want something a bit better than the plastic fantastic, then both Canon and Sigma make decent 50mm f/1.4s.

Finally, to replace the 50mm f/1.8 (or more accurately to give you the same functionality on full frame that you currently get from that lens on your crop sensor) your best bet would be the Canon EF 85mm f/1.8.

With the 5D are you limited to only using L lenses?
No. Any Canon EF lens or any Sigma DG lens or any Tamron Di lens will fit. Canon EF-S and Sigma DC and Tamron Di-II won't fit because they're designed for crop sensors.

Or would something like the Tamron 17-50 fit?
No. It's Di-II, for crop sensors only.

Its looking to be a very expensive move...
Yes. So why exactly do you think it would be beneficial? And if you just replace your existing lenses like-for-like, what do you think you have gained?

If you want a 5D and you get a 7D you will always regret it.
I'm talking from experience.
Personally I didn't see the jump from 40d to 7d as that great.

Some of us do see it as great! I also would not want to use a 5dII for some of the faster wildlife stuff I try and do! ;)

Remember, full frame is not the panacea that so many here think it is.

Ideally ALL of your lenses will need to go, the first 4 definitely won't fit. 50/1.8 becomes good from f/2.8 but build quality and bokeh let it down badly. Great lens for group shots though.

The cheapest L-way into full frame lenses would be 17-40L + 70-200 f/4L (£800 2nd hand), and you can throw in 100mm macro or 85/1.8 if you like. Another alternative is 24-105mm f/4L IS kit. Everything else will be far more expensive to cover that range, or inferior.

Based on your current kit 7D doesn't sound like your ideal camera, nor the current lenses would make it shine.

Other things to take into account could include...

Full frame lenses to cover the same field of view are probably going to be bigger and heavier.

You haven't listed a flash and as you'll lose the built in one at least a basic add on one might be needed.

PS. We may have different views on what's acceptable and what isn't but I'm a bit surprised at your comments on noise as my 20D seems to do ok after processing so I wonder if you either need new noise reduction software or to brush up on the use of what you've got at the moment.

More to the point, why do you need/want a 5D2 ?

I know my reasons for wanting one, but I'm willing to continue with my 7D until such time that I can afford a new 5D2 with a lens or two to go with it. The 7D WILL show a distinct rise in IQ over the 40D, you have the wireless ETTL facility, a much bigger sensor which will give you better, larger prints, more up to date metering & focus systems, and should you need it, a faster fps rate.

It will take your crop sensor lenses, but will show up any weakness in the quality. I am more than happy with the quality of my portraits taken with my 7D.

Lightroom 3 certainly does wonders compared to the previous versions and anything else I've tried. Good exposure also certainly helps... But that also makes ones like 5DII just as much better.

High ISO of the newer Canon crop cameras is very good, and a big step up from the 40D. I have the 60D and it's really usable at ISO 3200. Even ISO 6400 is bearable with good exposures and with some pp.

However, the IQ of the full frame cameras really is better. I have a 5D classic and it performs very, very well at ISO 1600. I use the 5D for everything except wildlife or where I need crazy high ISO capability, which is where the 60D steps in.
