so has any one here used both and be willing to offer their opinion on each?
one of these will be my next lens but can't decide if low light performance would be more appealing over close focussing. any one have any photos using a 35mm 1.8 to demonstrate close focus ability?

All depends on what you want to do I suppose. Minimum focus for 35mm f1.8 is 0.3m where the 40mm F2.8 is 0.163m. I personally think if you want low ligh and more of 3d picture then go for 35 F1.8. if you want focus really close and have a more flat picture then go for the 40mm f2.8.
 
That is true, it will be some thing list F3.4 ? Not that you would use F2.8 when you focusing that close .
