420 ex or ...

Looking at getting a flash and seems good to have high speed sync, E TTL, zoom, focus asist, tit and swing , lots of power and probably half a dozen other things I do not yet understand.

Hope to spend less than £100 so was looking at 2nd hand canon 420ex or a Nissin / Yonugu.

Any advice welcome. Camera is 550D if relevant.

You might struggle to get a Canon for that price. I have a yongnuo YN468 which does what you require. You should be able to get one from eBay for around £60 new

Had look on ebay and the 420ex go from £80 to £100 odd 2nd hand.
Only thing putting me off the Nissin / Yonugu models is no high speed sync which, i read some where on here, good to have in sunny conditions - though if staying in UK might not be relevant

Shouldn't struggle too much. A used 420EX will usually be no more than £80.

IMO, yes. The only downside to the 420 is that there is no manual control, you need a 430 for that.

Thanks and one last question- well on this subect

I am definitely at the bottom of the learning curve and thought the E TTL would look after the flash settings, assume the main advantages of manual control is being able to put in your preferred settings?

TBH think it will be a while before I am am there.

In a nutshell, yes.

TBH think it will be a while before I am am there.

Walk before you can run etc etc.

If/when you decide to upgrade the flash you shouldn't loose too much money on resale.

You might get lucky and get a 430EX MK1 for a £100. You would certainly get one for around £110.
