I have a 450D with kit lens and now getting use to it. I also have two Sandisk memory cards, a flipside 300=, Redsnapper tripod and a CPL for the kit lens. I don't have a flash gun as of yet - I don't feel I need one as I wont be doing a lot of shooting indoors.

I was going to wait till the spring to get additional lens for the camera, but may get one soon.

I like lens recommendations for the following types: I have a rough budget of around £500 per lens. I like all types of the below styles, but obviously I may need a different sort of lens for each thing.

1) Landscape - as in hills, lakes etc. This includes taking images of water - blurring the water especially for waterfalls. I also like to take images in dusk/dawn conditions with sun. I've seen Sigma 10-20 being mentioned a lot, but not too sure. Would like multiple opinions before I splash the cash.

2) Slow aircraft - not fast ones like jet fighters but more airport bases coming into land etc.

3) Street and city photography. I want to take images in cities, towns and streets. I love buildings and the various types.

I'm not interested in taking images of motor sport and birds.I don't really thing I'm that interested in portrait photography either.

1. All for around £500 or less: Tokina 12-24m Canon 10-22 or Tokina 11-16. All very good lenses

2. £569: Sigma 120-400mm OS or you could go for a Canon 70-200 f4 if you do not need a longer length, or even a Canon 70-300mm IS

3. You could just use the lens from (1) or complement it with a nice Canon 24-105mm IS for around £600 or a Canon 17-40mm for around £500. For a lower budget the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 is also lovely as is the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8

Hope this helps :)

The Sigma one looks good for 120-400mm. I suppose that could be used for landscape photography as well for closeups?

I would thought I wide angle lens would do well for city images and for buildings, so would there be a big difference between the lens you mention in option 1 compared to option 3?

A good wide angle would be just fine for both 1 and 3 in my opinion.

If I were you I would get either the Canon 10-22 or the Tokina 12-24 and the Sigma 120-400 for now and then add the 24-105 when you can afford it.

This would cover the range from 10(or 12) up to 400 quite well!

Sigma 17-70 would do for landscapes and macro/close ups. You could pick one up for around £200 second hand. You could pair this with a 70-200 f4L for about £375 second hand. Both cracking lenses. I have a 450D and love it. You'll notice a big difference in quality with these lenses over the kit lens.

This makes a lot of sense to me. A very usable general purpose and a super L lens. Terrific package !

I think I want something a bit wider than the 17-70.

I think one of the Tokina 12-24m Canon 10-22 or Tokina 11-16or Sigma 10-20 will do me well, but not sure of which.

I'm still not 100% sure what lens. I think I will leave the long zoom lens till middle of the summer, as I can do without that till then and focus on the landscape/city sort of lens.

Yet to decide about city lens. I may just get the landscape lens so to speak mainly for landscapes and see how I go on with buildings and city scenes.

I don't think you need much wider mate. 17mm is pretty wide. There are folk who use the 70-200 for landscapes so you really don't need ultra wide angle lenses. It's a matter of personal choice of course. The good thing about the 17-70 is it's pretty good for macro too. If you wanted better image quality you could plump for the 17-40L. Not sure how much better but i think it's better all the same.
