which is better ... 450D or 5Dmk1

the 5D is a few years older than the 450D - does it show ?

I'm not into sports or wildlife

I am into landscapes / portraits / cars / buildings.

so ... forgetting glass completely :) let them battle it out

IQ / Focusing / Light / features (useful ones) / controls- menus etc etc

You can't really compare 450D v 5D

However, for landscapes / portraits / cars / buildings etc, the quality of the 5D will shine through, you'll benefit from the wide angle lenses because of the full frame, ISO performance is better, probably similar autofocus characteristics (not 5D or 5D MKII greatest point), but will produce some fantastic landscape shots due to the very high image quality, wide angle field of view and/or shallow depth of field it will create being FF.
 
5D, better IQ, full frame, better handling (IMO), better built.
 
For your type of shots (landscapes / portraits / cars / buildings).

5d is better in terms of IQ/Full Sensor/Low lights.

450D is a fantastic camera too, I borrowed my mate's one for a month. Its a great value if you planning to buy it second hand.
