Hi all

Starting to question the practicality of carrying around my rucksack bag with my nifty fifty, kit lens and 55-200 zoom.
I love the image quality and bokeh I can get but the size means I dont take the camera out with me unless on hols are a planned photographic trip.

I have read many reviews on Panasonics LX3 and Canon G11. My main concerns before I put my kit up for sale is the increased risk of noisy images, poor zoom and poor bokeh.

I can only afford to buy what I get if I sell all of my kit (very expensive Christmas!!)

Any advice or others to recommend?

Thanks for the quick replies. My alternative is to spend up to £150 on a "carry about compact"

You will get a decent compact in the sales for £150 so my advice would be keep the 450D and buy a compact, that way you have the best of both worlds.

I had a G9 before my Dslr...

Great camera, manual controls, shoots raw, ok up to ISO400....
But limited on aperture/shutter settings....
Hard to control bokeh...

Bought my Dslr for full photo control....

Still use my G9 if i cant be bothered to carry all my gear...

I would keep your dslr and by a small canon compact...
If you can push it get the G11...

This seems to be the trend - DSLRs are great fun for the hobbyist and an essential tool for the professional. Trouble is for most if us all the pros can turn to cons.

Pro: A range of lenses allow you to do the type of photography that you'd like.
Con: A range of lenses cost a load and they need carting around in an expensive bag.

Pro: A good size sensor takes a great shot.
Con: The body is bulky, heavy and attracts attention.

I am sure there are loads of others.

I flogged all my kit and purchased a Bridge camera. After some time I hanker for a DSLR for the quality but know that it is not the right solution. I contemplate buying a GF1 but know that the next latest and greatest is just around the corner - it looks great but they do turn up on here from time to time.

I still enjoy hanging out on here but take far fewer pictures than I did in my heyday. I guess it's a hobby that you either choose to spend money on and live with the consequence - or sell up and find something else.

I'd recommend keeping the DSLR, I've yet to see a compact that comes close to a DSLR for high ISO image quality. Shop about for a decent used compact to compliment your DSLR, in the last month there has been Canon G9 (£150) and a Panasonic LX2 (£120) in the classifieds, those sort of cameras would definitely be worth a look.

I went from a 450d to the GF1 and i love it!!!!!!!!!

I've just bought a Canon S90 for the exact reason I wanna be able to carry a camera with me 24/7. I'm keeping the DSLR kit but it'll stay at home when I'm walking and the weather isn't good.

It was a toss up between the LX3 and the S90 (S90 uses same sensor as a G11) but as it ultimately came down to size I chose the S90 due to it being a bit smaller but reviews can't really split the two.

Its not a cheap compact by any means though!
