Just after a few thoughts and opinions folks. Basically I’m looking to upgrade my camera body. I currently have a 450D and I have this feeling that the images just aren’t as good as they could be. I feel they could be sharper, have less noise and a bit more clout about them.

I’ve already upgraded the glass and have the following lenses: Canon 70-200 F4 L, Canon 17-55 F2.8 USM, Canon 50mm F1.8, and Canon 100 mm F.28 USM. I also have a 430 EXII flash.

In the past I have read and asked questions about the differences between the 7D and the 60D. I am aware that the 7D had a dual processor and a better auto focus. I’m also aware that it’s more expensive and money is to a certain degree a factor. I know the usual question is what do you shoot and I can only answer everything, I go out walking and exploring and the camera comes along. Both cameras also have wireless flash control which is a bonus.

My question is; what is the difference in picture quality between me going up from a 450D to either a 60D or a 7D, is the leap going to be about the same to both models or significantly different from one to the other. Should I be looking at other cameras 50D, 5D Classic, like I say I have some reasonable glass and am interested in the jump in picture quality.

Ive had the 450d and it wasnt IQ that let it down, it was the handling.
I dont think either a 7D or 60D will improve your photos. I think learning correct technique and how to use what you have got will.
You have cracking lenses there and there is no reason at all why you shouldnt get the shots you want. The only advantage to the 7D and 60D might be the High ISO and being to crop a bit more.
Im pretty sure you will see very little diffrences in your images if you bought a new camera.

I moved from a 400D to 7D about 6 months ago. I did not expect too nor did I see any great advancement in IQ but I did get functionality and features I wanted + ISO and FPS more compliant to my style and subject of favor. If you feel you have reached the limits of your current body ( by this I mean you know all the set up and controls and custom features but still can achive IQ/shutter speed etcetera you want) a newer one may be the ticket and the 7D is a cracker, (best in class crop) - although the Nikon's ability to deal with noise and low light is impressive.
 
Something to think about could be processing software?

I've never been a fan of heroic processing measures but some processing has to be done and I've noticed a definite improvement since going from CS2 to CS5. The noise handling and just everything really seems to be better. I also tried Elements 9 and was very impressed but went for CS5 as I prefer to have manual options rather than the more automatic options of E9.

The 450D feels small in my hands, I like the chunky sturdy feel of the larger cameras after playing in Jessops. I dont think the ISO on the 450D is very good and I'm not impressed with the noise. I am yet to shoot more than single shots though.

Im sure my technique will continue to improve for as long as I'm out taking photographs.

I would have thought that with the huge difference in price between the xxxd, xxd, and xd bodies that the image may correspondingly improve.

I currently process using LR 3
 
Another vote for the handling being worth the upgrade, even if you went to just a 40/50/60D.

It all depends in what images you are shooting when it comes to IQ. More exspensive bodies will allow you to get a high qaulity image in more difficult circumstances. ie. More exspensive bodys will handle noise better which will improve lowlight situations, better AF and higher FPS is ALOT better for shooting moving objects, a full frame sesor captures alot more detail and has a better dynamic range. All these things are costly improvments but dont always mean improved IQ over your 450D.

If you find the 450 fiddly, like I did, either get a grip (not being cheeky I mean a grip grip) or upgrade to a 40D or 50D, it wont be anywhere near as costly as a 60D or 7D.
 
Maybe some newer / better noise reduction might be an idea?

As to handling, could a grip be an option?
 
I went from a 350D to a 40D and I have to say I much prefer the weight and handling of the 40D. It feels much more solid and fits my hands better.
 
I went from the 450D to the 50D for ergonomic reasons, saw little difference in IQ though.

For the latest gen, why would you think this? The 600D, 60D and 7D all share the same sensor, so they will take equally good or bad pictures. Where they differ is in the features the user is presented with.
 
Cost is relative, often you need to spend ALOT more to get a little bit better, i.e a Ferrari 430 is fast/nice but for something properly quick/next level up you will spend £600k on an Enzo etc. Was the only analagy I could think of right now sorry. Probably the same with music equipment and such too.
