Yes
i wanted to get a 450d but now i want my camera to have hd video shooting as well.
so which would you go for the nikon d5000 or the canon 500d. reasons?
thanks

HD shooting is all the same well mainly as your buying a photo camera you should really look at those features rather than the added feature of shooting video. Look at the other features of the 2 cameras and see which you preffer, even go to a shop and handle the cameras you may find you prefer how the D5000 feels in your hand over the 500D or vice versa no point is telling you to buy a 500D if you cant easily read the shutter button or the rear buttons.

I have a 500D and looked at the D5000 and broadly speaking the spec is not a millions miles from each other.

I prefered the Canon both ergonomically and also the menus and options seemed more intuative to me (probably becuase I already used a Canon)

As for the "real" comparison you must go into a shop and try them both side by side - you'll soon know which is the right one for you

The 500D and D5000 are at the same level as each other on each companies line up, so they're pretty similar.

The only difference I know is the screen on the D5000 can be flipped out whereas the one in the 500D static. Although the Canon has a larger and higher-res LCD screen and more mega pixels.

I'd really suggest going to a store to try them out for yourself though, both work and feel different. Also these are pretty small bodies so if you have large hands you may prefer a bulkier model, that was the biggest reason I didn't get on with the 500d.

Nikon cameras only support 720P video, which is actually only medium definition. Canons support true 1080P high definition video. The numbers refer to the vertical pixel resolution of the image. If you really want HD video, you should therefore go for the Canon.

Having said that, Martyp's advice to go along to the store and try them both out is sound.

My OH has the 500D but the Nikon is an excellent camera as well (a friend has one and I gave it a try).

Have a look at the comparison and reviews here:

Also I would suggest having a close look at them at a local store to see how they feel in your hand before you decide.

Another thing to consider is the lenses you can get for each and their prices (more choice and better pricing for some lengths for each brand).

Good luck!

As you've already got the Canon and presumably are happy with it, a transition across to the 500D would be quick and easy, also any lenses you have will also fit
