Ok...

Once hy Paypal probs are settled I intend buying a Canon 500d & EF 28-135 USM IS...

For £250 more I could have a 50D...

Do I save it for glass or is the jump worth considering...?

This is my first DSLR...I use a Panasonic FZ30 Bridge camera...about the same size as the 500D

I have tried both and felt a big difference that would require getting used to with the 50D...but would I regret it later...?

HELP...all you Canon guys...no pressure as will still make my own mind up...but some good/bad, +/- pointers would help steer me...

THANKS

I have recently gone from a fuji bridge camera, which is probably not too dissimilar in size to the XXXD range, to a secondhand 40D with grip. I have to say I love the feel of the 40D without grip and its a massive step up in build quality, it's like a rock that can take pictures. I think it would be best to go for a secondhand 40D and then you will still have the money for decent glass.

Thanks guys...

But a 40D is more 2nd hand than a new 500d...

For £150 more than that...ok you also get a grip...I could get a new 50D...

I would prefer to buy new...also want it to last a few years so 10mp vs 15 mp and chip same as a 5d...!!!

Im gettin a good deal from a guy on the forum NEW but imported,,,full warranty...so for me there is no option...

Just the choice between the cameras...just my POV...sometimes you can buy someone elses probs...

In general terms you'll find an xxD body usually better than an xxxD body.
It's not always true of course as you have to consider the age, for instance I'd think the 500D would walk all over (say) a 10D in most respects. But that's only because technology has improved and it's available in the later models.

On the other hand the 10D would probably feel a lot better as far as build quality is concerned.

So if it's a choice between the 500D and the 50D, then personally I'd take the 50D every time. However... DO try and physically get your hands on both of them. It's one thing looking at the specs and comparing on paper, it's a whole different thing on which you prefer once you get your mitts on them!

I'd say save the cash for glass unless you really hate the feel of the 500D. Decent glass may give you more images you're happy with than a better body. They're both good cameras but a decent lens on a 500D may give better results (under most conditions) than a 50D.

I'd also suggest waiting until early September to make your decision. Rumor has it Canon will be announcing some new EOS bodies around then.

George.

That would be my Canon man...449 for the 500d body...so £250 difference...then add a EF 28-135mm lens...(they review well) £255...and UV filter etc...and hey presto...

Also considering a few cheapsies from Ebay...

Anyone any views on these:

Battery (x2) Grip - 370242911493
Flower Lens Hood - 270438058849
Transform Flash Bracket - 280383142164
Macro Tubes - 350213909462
Reversing Ring - 110387945760
Macro Bellows - 250473926331

I usually manual focus for macro with my Pannie FZ30 Bridge...so the cheapsies limitations would not bother me...fancy layering as well...to get different DOF effects...

The 500d is around the same size as my FZ30 and feels good in the hand...whereas the 50d felt biggish...but dont want to miss out if it would just take some getting used to...
