When reviewing pictures on the camera's LCD screen, and I zoom in 10 times to the maximum magnification, is this 100% of the image size, i.e. equivalent to a 100% crop?

no

100% crop means one pixel of the image is displayed on 1 pixel of the screen.

100% crop means one pixel of the image is displayed on 1 pixel of the screen.

I see. So on the 50D with a 920,000 LCD screen and a 15 million effective megapixels sensor, you'd have to zoom in 16.3 times before it becomes a 100% of the image, meaning that 10x maginifcation on the screen is only... 61% of the full image size?

Thanks!

I see......
Actually, you only thought you saw

Your 50D's sensor is 4752 pixels wide and your screen is 640 pixels wide. 4752/640 will give about 7.4x "zoom" for a perceived 100% crop.

The LCD is 640 x 480 (VGA spec) and that gives 307,200 pixels derived from the 920,000 "dots" (three colours required on the LCD). The maths won't work on the height because the sensor has an aspect ratio of 1.5 but the LCD is 1.33 so the sensor image doesn't fill the height of the LCD without zooming.

Hope that makes sense

Edit...or maybe I've got it wrong

Nope! Still none the wiser :lol::lol:

Well I for one am getting a headache.

Keep pressing the "make it bigger" button until it stops making it bigger. Then press the "make it smaller" button once or twice so it gets smaller again...hey presto, you're as close as you need to be ;)

Edit....maybe I'm still getting it wrong
