Yes
So out of the above models (50d, 5dmkii, nikon d300 or nikon d700) which do you think is going to be the best for music photography (Gigs, promos etc) aswell as for portraiture, fashion and product etc.

Basically looking for the best camera for all round but more pointed towards music photography.

Also wheres the best and cheapest place to get them?
Ive finally got myself enough money together to get a new camera as ive managed to get a few press orientated jobs.

hope someone can share their view.

I think the 5D Mk II is a good choice for concerts too, not sure on the Nikon line up, but what Mick said :D

Full frame is always a better choice for low light.

You won't go far wrong with either the 5Dii or the D700. Have a look to see if you can pick one up second hand to save some cash for decent lenses.

I'd go with full frame.
Check out the ISO performance on http://imaging-resource.com/
There is not much between the D700 and 5D mk2, it's a matter of preference.

For portraiture and fashion, the 5D2 will ultimately give you more detail and sharpness, but the D700 won't disappoint either and has a free grip at the moment. A replacement might be due soon though.

I've always FF is better in the picture quality department

D700. Great in low light. Focuses really well when lights are dimmed. Very low noise at high ISO. Don't forget to factor in the cost of good fast glass. Nikkor 24-70 2.8, 50mm 1.4 etc....

Im in the same boat, where is the offer with free grip ?

Im on a 5D mk1 at the moment and having a tough time deciding between 5d mk2, d700 or 1DIII (which also offers ISO6400), the 1D is older but excels in other areas, where the d700 is overall awesome, even has great AF, but that would cost me the most as I Have lots of canon glass :bonk:

If price isn't an issue then D700 everytime for me. Combines FF benefits and decent AF in an affordable package - something Canon have, so far, chosen not to do.

D700 - high ISO capability for gigs and concerts and FF for maximum detail on portraits...
It's a No-Brainer IMO...as long as you have nothing invested in glassware from 'the other side'...
For the work you've just described, the ideal lenses would be the 24-70 f/2.8 and the 70-200 f/2.8 VRII - or nearly another £3k to find on top of the camera body...

Hey guys thanks for all the replies.

Well i have some lenses for the canon camera i have.

18-55 kit lens
Canon 50mm 1.8
Sigma 18-50mm 2.8
Sigma 18-200mm dc os 3.5/6.3

So from what ive been told they are not going to be much cop on a FF camera anyway... right?

So... unless i can use those, im pretty neutral in what make to buy.
I love Canon as i have used them from point and shoot to super zoom and dslr.
But i do like Nikons look and feel but havent really shot anything with one bar a D60.

Im not going to be able to buy many lenses at high cost, but the 24-70 or similar is a def. Most likely 2nd hand.

Even though I'm a Canon shooter I would suggest the D700 - great offer on with a free grip at the moment too.

What you'll need to be aware of though is the huge step up in knowledge you must possess between the Canon 1000D and something like a D700 or 5DMkII - these are both professional cameras and will only produce professional quality images if you know what you're doing (it was a steep learning curve for me going up from a 400-50-1DIIn).

Glass wise I would look at some fast primes to sit alongside a 70-200. What about a 80mm 1.8 and a 35mm 1.4 (not sure if Nikon produce them, but Canon certainly do).

Not done any gig photography but these are certainly the images I would choose for my event photography.

IMO the 5D mk II is great for gig photography.

People moan about the poor AF, but I've found it to be just fine. (Bear in mind that I've used the 24-70 L and 70-200 L both wide open at f/2.8.)

Check out a set of jazz pics on my website, and a couple of shots from a front row seat at a Queen tribute gig.. here and here

Both these sets were taken at around ISO 2000-4000.

I understand the huge jump up and to be honest ive got a lot of time to practice as i havent got a job after being made redundant! So i plan on shooting all the chances i get and i got some friends in bands and friends that are modelling that will help me out. Aswell as having the chances to shoot some great gigs and festivals soon.

So at the moment it seems D700 and 5dMKii....

I see the grip offer with d700 the other day not sure where though! think it was warehouse express?

If printing larger or video functions are important then 5DII.

Printing larger than what?
You can enlarge images from a D700 to the size of a bloody house...

I can get A0 and A1 from my D3 with no effort (and used to get them from my D2x as well, come to think of it...)...

D700 all the way from me too.

I changed from Canon to Nikon because the D700 gave the complete package. Stunning AF AND high ISO. I had a 5D and a 1DsII and 7 lenses with 2 flashes and even then it made sense for me to move over. In the end the total upgrade to 2 D700's 5 lenses and 2 flashes cost me the same as a 5DII.

I've printed to A3+ on the Nikon and files viewed at 100% on screen are just awesome. I certainly don't miss the extra pixels of the 1Ds, they just created more noise at higher ISO!

Where did you get your d700 and lenses from?!

Got to agree with Arkady, I print at A1 with my measly 8.9mpx 1DII so a 12+mpx D700 will have no problems.

I bought mine from Kerso on here but he's had to stop offering Nikon because of the exhange rate which is a shame. Either that or I scared him! lol

I did put together a spreadsheet of all the UK sources though and funnily enough Jessops did not do too badly, go and talk to your local manager ;)

You mention Jessops... i have found them to be pretty cheap if not the cheapest compared to alot of others. I am going to the local jessops to have a feel of the d700 and 5dmkii this week.

In regard to lenses... just having a look around and it seems nikon fitted lenses are quite abit more expensive then canon fit. This could sway the vote again... but then on ebay ive seen the 24-70 2.8 cheapish on both fittings.... just a 70-200 2.8 that seems to be alot....

If I was starting over (or didn't have a lot invested in Canon lenses), I'd have gone for the D700. Having said that, the 5DMKII is an excellent bit of kit and I'm really happy with mine. I recently did a very heavy crop (approx 1/4 of the actual image), had it printed to A4 and framed and the quality is outstanding!

I've had no problems with the AF in low light and the high ISO performance is brilliant too. Having seen the output from Nikon's D700, I'd agree that it has the edge at high ISO's and it's very good value at the moment with the free grip offer.

If you can, try a few different ones because regardless of performance, you need to be comfortable with a camera or you'll never get the best from it. :)

It might be worth reading some reviews of both 70-200 offerings. The new 70-200L f2.8 IS II is getting raving reviews about being super sharp wide open (but it is very expensive!). The MTF graphs and sample images beat the VRII hands down. Also the VRII has an issue with dissapearing focal length at closer distances.

Whatever you choose, I'd ask Kerso for a price over eBay any day.

This is a good point - I've also had plenty of success with printing heavily cropped 5dii shots - the resolution of the camera with decent glass is simply outstanding in my opinion. I'm sure you'd have similar success with Nikons but I can't comment on those as I've not tried them.

D700 for sure, amazing low light performance, autofocus will be bang on consistently. Pick of the bunch for music photography I'd have thought!

Make sure they have them in stock.

My local jessops don't hold any cameras in worth more than about £500 and have to order them in from the warehouse if people want to try them.

yeah i will give them a bell tomorrow and see if they have any in for the weekend.

Appreciate all the input. and hopefully i can make my mind up soon.

Managed to have a feel of the 5dmkii and the d700 today. Love them both which doesnt help at all.

I had jessops saying neither are good for concert togging and i should really consider a 7d! i took a pic with the 7d with their 50 1.8 on it and it showed alot of noise at iso 800.

So after all of this i still dont know whether to get the 5dmkii or d700..... maybe i should wait abit and see what comes out or what prices drop?

:cuckoo:

Another idiot in a shop then - D700 (or Canon equivalent - assuming there is one) is perfect for concert togging...

I knew he was an idiot as soon as he served me. he confirmed it when he said had i looked at the 450d bundle they have for sale...... Obviously didnt understand that im going to be shooting for a publication and need to get the best gear i can with the money i got.

Also spoke to the manager and he said he would knock a tenner off the final sale and thats the best deal around.

So i walked up the road and low and behold camera world have both bodies cheaper and will even give me a discount on a 24-70 2.8.

Do it...lol

the only benefit of a high street shop nowadays is after-sales service and if they're idiots you'll not be going back in any case...

Have you seen this website?

http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/index.html

Also, I have a 5DmrkII & a 7D, the 7D has much worse low light performance so the Jessops guy didn't have a clue (as you said).

I've always wanted to try a D700 though. Also, someone else mentioned video which might be useful for you in which case the canons are currently better than the Nikons.
