Hello

I hope some of you might be able to help. I have a Canon 50D and have been having problems when using the hot shoe for a flash gun or a transmitter to studio lights. The issue is that it only seems to work maybe 5 out of 10 shots getting worse after 5min or so then its 2 out of 10 shots and so on... I have tried both my flash gun and transmitter on other cameras and they work fine with them so I know its my 50D. Has anyone else had this problem? If so what did you do. I really need my camera for work as I use it most day luckily usually without flash, as its out of warranty I would rather not send it to canon and be without it for weeks on end.

Please help.. :'(

Is there any movement in the hotshoe on the camera? On some Canon cameras they can work loose and cause problems. It's a 2 minute job to fix if it turns out to be the problem.

If there is a flash on the hotshoe can you still get the onboard flash on the 50d to pop up if you press the button on the camera?

Yeah that pops up fine.. I think it must be something to do with the connection as when I use a trigger attachement to send a signal to my studio lights I have the same issue. Only working now and again. Very strange.

Does it pop up when there is a flash on the hotshoe? It shouldn't.....

I had an issue at one point with a cheapy type connection. The flash wasn't making great contact with the camera. Using an extension cord, which had a much better connection system (balls/pins), then connecting it to the flash, it was much better.

If the camera is tripod mounted though (i.e. the flash isn't being waved around), this is probably less likely to be the cause.

Its strange it should happen with both my bits of equiptment that use the shoe though, they seem to work fine on my 400D and my boyfriends 350D so i am sure its the camera.

Oh sorry no it dosnt pop up then.. only when it should pop up.

Ok, that rules out one possible cause. I'd check the hotshoe though and make sure there definitely isn't and movement there as, other than something simple, such as you beating the recycle time of your lights, that sounds like the most likely culprit.
