Just aquired a 50D and 17-85mm kit for a pretty good price but apart from the missing battery (That's another story :suspect:) there is no hood for the lens. Can't see anything about one on the included acessories list but would have though there should be one in the box?

No, Canon only supply hoods with the lens on L series lenses.

You'll have to source and pay for the hood separately unfortunately.

I think the hood you need for the 17-85 is the Canon EW-73B.

No longer have either but I certainly got a Canon hood with a 50D + 17-85 kit.....

bought mine new and no hood in the box it was not part of the package

They never are.

The only way you'll get a hood as part if a package is if an independent retailer offers one as part of a deal.

Canon only give away hoods packaged with L lenses.

As Jim said, no hood supplied by Canon as standard with this lens from new

You must have been lucky....

Why do you want to sell the lens on straight away ?

I've the lens and am very happy with it, yes (as always) there are better lenses out there, but then there is the additional cost ...

Did you get a battery sorted out ?
 
Just presumed it would be pretty average, have never seen a reasonable kit lens tbh but perhaps I will give it a try.

No battery sorted out yet ... bit annoying with the camera sat on the side and a MP-E65 with twin macro flash upstairs in the cupboard. :lol:

Bought a couple of batteries for my 50d from the 7day shop for £5.99 each and they have proved to be good and last as long as the gen Canon one. The 17-85mm lens is a step above the average kit lens and definatly worth using, not L glass I know but not bad.
