As i have a 50D a mate of mine is toying with getting one. I noticed some on the bay but he doeasnt want to buy from there.

Now, now sure if i am allowed to link on here (apologies if not) but does this seem like a good deal for a 50D:

My mate said he would have to buy a lens and would prefer to buy one with a lens but i am sure this looks like a good price etc?

He could even pick up a cheap 18-55 to play around with until he gets used to the camera?

It appears to be great price for a 50d which is a superb camera at low isos, fast shooting, autofocus and resolution xlnt, great for studio but noise is a problem above 200 iso (we have one we use regularly).

Ok so a good price then. Just got to persuade him how good it is before it goes. An 18-55 will suffice i guess?
 
18-55 feels very wrong on such a well engineered camera. perhaps a Tamron 28-75 as a minimum.
 
To the OP - that seems to be a good price to me for a low count body in mint condition with the 2 cards and 4 batteries.

Not sure what you are doing to say that but the 50D can handle noise well in excess of ISO200.
The below shot was taken at ISO1600. The only thing I did in photoshop was sharpen and convert to JPEG.

There are folk on here with 50D's who are getting clean images at ISO3200+.

Poor ISO performance on the 50D seems to be a common misconception!

Very good price normaly around £500 with more use and no extras.

The Tamron 17-50 f2.8 lens is a good choice for around £180-200 2nd hand.

Garbage! The camera hands very well at ISO1600.
I shoot weddings on mine and have never been unhappy with the results, and the ones I am unhappy with is usually user error :lol:

Noise a problem above 200 iso?!? Don't make me laugh!

Have you actually used one properly?!? I get perfectly acceptable shots at iso 3200!

Perhaps I'm pushing it a bit saying above 200. More like above 400 perhaps ie 640- 800 although this noise is much less noticable when images are carefully exposed I.e. to the right on the histogram.

It's so much noisier than the 5d mk 1 for sure.

What did you really expect :lol:

I'm sorry, but the 50D is more than capable of handling noise at ISO1600.

You might want to look at getting yours sorted if you think anything above ISO400 is a problem. Try getting a 10D and see the results

It depends what you compare it with.

1Ds mkII and 1D mkIII eat 50D for dinner at ISO 400 and above. It is not to say that 50D can still produce acceptable results in some cases, but yes the noise is very clearly there. I am not even going to discussion about ISO1600 as it is a noise reduction software territory (in camera or post) - for some smudged, plasticky but clean ISO 3200 shots are perfectly acceptable.

No offence as I don't really want to get into this "lets slag of the 50D debate" either but
1) you can't really compare it to a 1D mkII/III
2) the 1600 ISO image I posted above has not had any PP or fettling done to reduce noise whatsoever.

1) yes, but then you can't compare to 10D either. A direct comparison is D90 and I know which one got more better reviews. DsII is a significantly older camera by the way...

2) Is there any in camera noise reduction on? Btw at those sizes it would have to be really bad to show up!

True....but I never mentioned the 10D as a comparison.

Yes default setting for C. Fn II: Image was set to 0 which is standard

Anyway. Comparisons aside, the 50D gets bashed for poor high ISO images which I and others would beg to differ.

This is completely incorrect, and not the first time you've spouted testies in relation to the 50d.

I can show you perfectly clean and highly detailed iso 3200 shots from my 50d. It's better than my 5d mk1 IMO at 1600 and above in some cases.

You just need to know what you're doing...

It wasnt me that made the first comparison. Comparing the 50D to the 5DmkI is going to make the 50D look noisey. Thats why I said compare it to the 10D then. And remember, the 10D was a camera that was rated highly when it was first released. What I'm saying is be grateful for what we have now, and remember where we came from. I didnt even mention the Canon D30 and D60 *shudders*

Ah the old 50D is noisy.

Not found an issue with mine and I'll shoot at 1600, 800 is no noise at all. Mind you, you do have to turn off those noddy features in the custom menu. (forgotten what they are - it's on the 50D thread).
 
I am new to all this but i have not seen any noise so where that guy got that nugget from i really dont know!
