50D queries

Hi folks, I have some queries re my new 50D. Sorry if they seem a bit basic but whilst I could build you a nice piece of furniture or a quality wrought iron gate, I do have problems with computers, mobile phones and electronics in general, so please be gentle with me!

I would like to try the 'back-button' method of focusing that I have come across in TP but for the life of me I cannot fathom out how to set it up, I really need someone to guide me through the various steps of the menu. Also, when I display an image on the LCD and then press the magnify button it does indeed do what it says on the tin but, when I press the button with the minus sign on it then it does not do what the book says it should, i.e. reduce it each time the button is pressed, mine merely switches off the image completely. Anyone have any thoughts on this please? Finally I would like to be able to check the shutter/actuations count and have read on numerous occasions that Opanda is the way to go. I have been on to their website and as usual I am totally confused by what I am looking at. Would someone be kind enough to tell me what I should be looking for, where it is on the site and what I should be downloading. Many thanks indeed for any help that may be forthcoming.

For the minus button it's very similar to the back button focusing steps, only you want AF-ON/AE lock button switch (sub menu 2 in the FnIV menu). I'm guessing yours is on Enable, switch it to disable and give that a try.

For the shutter count I used EOSInfo. Connect your camera to the PC and everything should become clear.

I'm after a wrought iron gate, can you do them with greyhounds :D

Hi ozanan, Thank you so much for your response to my query, I will have a stab at what you suggest. Sorry about the gate but I am now retired and don't have my equipment anymore! regards.

Hope it helps Geoff, not sure if its mentioned in the article I linked to or if its appropriate for your camera
The AF needs to be set to AF Servo when using the back button method, I have a 500D though and could well be different on your higher range model

Definitely a good system and if you fancy buying a good book that explains it, try this its great and explains lots more besides especially exposure (in fact better than some books on that very subject)

Hi again Rich, Thanks again for being so helpful, have used your link and yes it looks really useful, will probably order it tomorrow. Thanks again Geoff

No problem at all Geoff, took me a while to get to grips with the whole exposure bit, but then it just all clicks into place.
Read a few books, but this one made the most clear sense and explained back button focusing along with using the histogram to get the best exposure really well too

Hope all goes well and you certainly seem to have some good weather to try everything out

Cheers
Rich
