Ey up,

Im off to cad west next week with a couple of mates. Ive just bought a 50D and Im taking my 70-200 f2.8 IS with me. Trouble is, i dont want to waste a day by taking shots in the sports mode. Has anyone got any suggestions for recommended settings? (shutter speed, aperture etc etc)

Depends on the type of picture that you are taking. Suggest you select AV and adjust the apertureto give the depth of field that you want.

I think Cadair Idris

A mountain in wales?

Hi Andy,

I always shoot in TV mode (Shutter Priority). For jets I try to use a 1/1000th of a shutter speed and for props 1/250th. Depth of field just doesn't come into it so let the aperture do what it wants. If you have an f2.8 lens you should be able to get good results with a nice low ISO (I always use ISO 200).

Hope its some help,

Mark

Oh, I see. I've never heard it called Cad West.

And yes, as Barry says, aperture priority and take control of the depth of field.

What's cad west?

for the op going up there enjoy the climb. There will be plenty of help and time to talk to the other guys up there. Hope you have a full flight day. Hope you read up on what stuff none camera wise to take with you.

Go for shutter priority at about 1/1000s if you expect nice sharp shots. As already been said, lower the speed for prop aircraft.
If you go for aperture priority, you may be dissapointed with the results. You only get one chance to get 'that' shot up Cad West.Make sure you're well prepared with clothing, food and water too.
The weather can change very quickly up there.
But most of all, have a great time!

Kev.

Agree with setting TV and not AV. Suggested AV if taking landscapes, thus getting good depth of field.

I went for the first time last week. I used 1/500 for the jets and 1/250 for the props although it wasn't a bright day. Next time I'd lower prop speed and if sunny raise jet speed but balance with aperture and ISO.

Take windproof / waterproof jacket and trousers and various layers to regulate temp. Hat good idea. Drink and snacks useful. Leave stuff you won't need (eg flashgun) behind. No point carting it up 300ft just to take it down again! There is a lot of waiting involved...

If I was a regular I'd get walking poles, but I used my monopod and it helped with the ascent and also on the way down again.

for good prop try for iso 100 if its bright and 1/200 and about f13 but if its dark and overcast try a higher iso about 320/400and 1/320 at f9/10 the sky will be darker than normal but the plane will be spot on and you can alter the lighting once you get home to suit (this is for props not jets the fast shooters will explain their methods)hope it helps
