Hi there,

I'm looking mainly for people with this combination of lenses as I have discovered a bizarre fault that is either a fault, or a known problem...

Basically, I have a 50D and the Sigma 10-20mm EX DC 1:4-5.6.

I'm having problems focussing manually, in that the shutter won't fire under some circumstances. Anyway, last night, I was doing some light painting, and had the lens set to manual focus. This morning I came to my camera, and it wouldn't switch on. Nothing. No lights, just nothing.

Further investigation has discovered that if the 10-20 lens switch is left on manual, the camera won't switch on. If I set the switch to AF, it works fine.

So...

- Does anyone else have this problem?
- Is it likely to be a problem with the lens, or the camera?

No other lens I have behaves this way (Canon 50mm f1.8, 24-105L, Sigma cheapy 70-300).

I'm a bit bemused to be honest...

Ian.

Hi Ian,

I have a 50D and the Sigma 10-20mm - I've never experienced anything like the issue you're having.

Don't know what to suggest as to where the problem lies  I wouldn't have thought the AF/M mode of the lens has any effect on the camera powering up or not...then again I'm no expert!

I have tried to quickly replicate the settings as described & my camera switched on.....

Thanks. At least I know it's not a common issue.

Definitely won't switch on with the lens set to "M". Works fine if set to "AF". If I switch teh camera on in "M" nothing happens, but then if I switch the lens to "AF" the camera turns on.

Very strange.

Ian.

Works fine on mine as well

Are you using it with a grip, sometimes I get weird camera behaviour if the grip has been mounted for a couple of weeks

No. No grip.

Neither lens or camera have ever been dropped either.

I'm suspecting the lens at the moment, but it's easily fixed by just switching to manual once the camera is switched on.

Ian.
