Yes
Just made the move from a 50D after 8 months to a 1d MKII N. (Previously had a 400D but played with quite a lot of Canon lenses and bodies in between)

Wow that's made me think before every shot again!

Anyone else made a similar move?

Cheers

Rob

I went from a 40D to 1DMkII some time ago. What a difference. Once you've used a 1 series there is no going back. The AF speed is amazing. Now I'm onto a MkIII, Letting the MkII go was hard, it's happy in its new home though :)

Must admit the AF is awesome beyond my expectations! I've just started doing more motorsports recently so expecting it to really outperform the 50D there.

Run of the mill stuff at home, still life etc...still working my way around it, but liking it so far.

A good move methinks!

Definately a good move. I did find that in low light if you are using a single focus point it hunted a bit. Once you have grown the extra finger to use the buttons it will get easier. It will be much better than the 50D for motorsports. Lightening fast AF and 8.5 FPS.

I have a 50D & IDs MkII but still pick up my I series every time unless I want the 1.6X factor

I've done exactly the same. Had a 50D, sold it, bought a 5 year old 1d mk2 for approx the same price. Crap screen, clunky menus and button-pressing, poor high ISO. Love it. So much better. Everyone always says that whatever they have bought is *easily* the best thing since sliced bread, but in this case it is actually true. Whilst the Mk3 sounded even better, it was three times the price (used vs used) and was not in the same league of bang for buck.

Nice to see everyone is on a positive with the move. I like it, it makes me think again, I love the ergonomics of it..

Going to give it a real run out in 2 weeks time at the races....the real test!

Anyone had any bad experiences with the 1D mkII?

Strange . I strongly prefer 'normal' bread.

In my case 1Ds2 >> 40D even though I miss easy handling and liveview in lower weight package. 40D is still with me when I need to machine gun something without the need for AF.

Only bad note I had was that I returned mine to Fixation for a service. Apparently the shutter springs are poor and are generally stretched to the point the need replaced at 50K activations. How true I don't know but mine was not exposing correctly and also needed the sensor calibrated. My shutter count was 57K!!

Since it came back from Fixation it has been spot on again but is now my second body as I got a mint 1Dmk3 three weeks ago:D

I went 400D > 5D > 1D mk IV (and i still use the 5D alongside it).

While the 1D is nice, I can't say I'm blown away by it. I guess I'm still running it in, and getting it set up how I like it. But the way some people wax lyrical about the AF, the build etc you'd think it would be a huge leap forward compared to a 5D.

Don't get me wrong, it's better than the 5D at most things. But not Earth-shatteringly so.

I had a shutter go at 37000:thumbsdown: but still love those mk2's.

I just got rid of my 5D, 50D and 30D for a 1Ds Mkii and a 1D Mkiii.

I'm delighted - with the minor exceptions of the small screen & display zoom method of the 1Ds Mkii I prefer everything about the 1-series.

The Mkiii has an amazing sensor - soooo sharp and lovely colours. Handling is just perfect, battery life is unbelievable, AF great etc etc.

I use the 1Ds Mkii at lower ISO primarily where it is stunning - I suspect the 5D might have edge above ISO800 but I'll use the Mkiii for very low light - fabulous at 1600 and impressive above that.

I had to get my shutter changed shortly after purchase on the 1Ds Mkii as I was getting white bands down one edge which shows it is about to fail. Cost was £235 all in from Canon.

Spring cost £8 replacement and sensor calibration and clean made a total bill of £300!
Wow they had you big time,I think the price of the shutter was about £60 the rest was labour, vat and postage, the give mine a full service and calibration at the same time.
