Hi Guys

Been away from Photography for some time and looking to get re-equiped

I have been looking at either the Canon 50D or the 7D

How do they stack up, I know when the 50D came out it was said that the 15.1 mp CMos was a backwards step over the 12 mp CMos on the 40D because of noise

Is the new 18 mp CMos beter or worse.

How do the two compare, is the 7D realy worth £500 more than the 50D should it realy be a 60D.

I was looking to upgrade my 350D and had been working on the basis that I would get a 50D just after the expected 60D when announced as prices should drop. The announcement back then was the 7D, which had so many extra features that appealed to me and how I shoot I decided the extra cash was worth it. Personal decision for you then, but I will say this the 7D is an awesome camera.
 
Both the 50D and the 7D handle noise very well, even at elevated Iso (though some say Nikon are better) so long as they are setup correctly and certain defaults are switched off rather than left on.
The price difference is quite large and if you dont need/want video then maybe the 50D is the better choice. There are other features which make the 7D a better camera of course and its a case of do you need those features and what is your budget. You could almost get a 50D and some very nice L glass for the same price as a 7D body, but if you have a big budget then that wont be an issue as you could afford both the 7D and the L glass, which it definitely needs to do it justice.
The 7D is without doubt a better camera than the 50D if you need its extra features, if you dont it would be a waste of money. Much like if you only drive in town why would you buy a super car when a Mini would be ideal. Just because its bigger/faster or more expensive etc doesnt mean its better for your particular needs.

I used to shoot film years ago and for me digital never had the quality of film, I would say my 50D has now the ability to match film quality and the 7D also make it virtually impossible to tell if its a digital or film print these days, but to achieve that quality you really do need decent glass.

The 7D is the better camera.

The 7D has more noise at low ISO than the 50D but handles it better higher up.

Buy a 40D :D
 
I found the 40D & 50D pretty much equal to eachother for IQ and high-ISO performance. The only noticeable improvements (for me) on the 50D were the better LCD screen and micro-focus adjustment. I kept the 50D for 3 days before taking it back.

The 7D is a much more noticable leap over the 40D. Every single area has improved, and high-ISO performance is around 1 stop better.

If cost is not a huge barrier, get the 7D. If it is, get a 40D.
 
I had this dilemma 2 months ago

I ended up going for the 50D and spending the extra money on a battery grip with remote and pocketing 400 quid saving for a new L series lens.

I'll be honest the 50D is amazing ...still doesn't compare to my works 1d mark 3 i use but then thats full frame,

it depends what you want to do, if its landscape bird etc then I have heard the 7D is better, I am mainly club events tog with a couple of glamour/fashion shoots a month

so the mondey was better spent else where ... hopefully by the time i get enough money for my 24-70 l series I will be good enough to get published work :-)
 
I hummed and hawed over this exact question for weeks and then went out and bought a 50D and some nice L glass to stick on it. I'm a happy bunny :)
