50D vs 40D

Hi Guys,

I'm looking to upgrade my body from the Xsi to the 50D, but I have some concerns whether forking out $1,200 for a new 50D is worth it in comparison to just paying maybe $750 for a 40D. It seems like Canon upped the resolution without polishing it's ISO performance. Is there any reason to grab the 50D other than the 5 MP increase?
 
The only reason I can see is the micro-adjustment. Thats the only real advantage I can see.
 
Thanks for your input. In my shoes, would you stick with your 40D then if you had to choose between buying one of the models?
 
Noise control is good considering you get 5 million extra pixels in the same sized sensor, and you get 3200 ISO as maximum (default) with 6400 and 12800 being options. The 40D has 1600ISO as maximum with 3200 being an expansion.

The screen and micro-adjustment are also good features.

However 50D or 40D and a good lens is a compelling argument for which you need to think about.

And upping the resolution without increasing the noise is a feat in its self, you are asking alot for it to fall. And yea, the main differences will be the micro-adjustment and the added fps, other than that the 450d would probably do........what makes you want an upgrade?
 
40D is cheaper, obviously, and has marginally better noise at very high ISO. Apart from that, 50D has it every way and has some neat new features if they are important to you.

But I'm sticking with my 40D and won't be upgrading until the 60D or even 70D, but you have quite a bit to gain by upgrading now. In practice, I think it boils down to price for most folks.
 
I am definitely upgrading to XXD, I want to shoot sports and need a stop-gap upgrade until I'm in a better financial position to upgrade to a professional body. It's just a question of 40D vs. 50D. I already have a 70-200 2.8 IS and a 50 1.4, so I'm more or less set lens wise, the only thing missing is a decent high-speed body with good AF.

Using my Rebel for sports just isn't an option...I've been getting by doing gigs with my employer's cameras but I can't afford to always hope for that. I need to have my own sports gear. I also want this purchase to be a future back-up camera to have once I have a 1D MK IV potentially.
 
I would say the 40D is a bargain at the moment and is excellent for action - I shoot (not literally) dogs using the servo setting and get some great images... 5 more MP for what - how big are you printing or tightly are you cropping??

40D for me :thumbs:
 
i see absolutely no point in in making a sideways upgrade unless there is a feature you really feel you cant live without.
If you are going to buy a new camera, move up, dont just get the new version of the same thing. I have a 40d now, i wont even consider a 50d, whats the point, id buy a 5dmk2 next or something higher up the chain than what i have, not just the replacement for what i have already.
 
40d... save the extra cash... or blow it on photography equipment :D we all know which one it would be...;):p
 
Alternative question, buy a used 1D 3 now or get a XXD and wait for the mark IV?

I am going career with this but I don't feel I have the business to justify getting a pro body yet. I also am unsure about getting a body that's about to go obsolete.

If you're serious about a sports photography career and "the only thing missing is a decent high-speed body with good AF" then you really need to get kitted up with a 1D3. Neither 40D nor 50D can hold a candle to it for action.

If you wait for the 1D4, you could be waiting a while, and the price will be steep. And that too will be superceded eventually. But remember that even when a camera is replaced, it doesn't stop the older models from performing every bit as well as they ever did. It just makes them cheapper on the used market.

If you are looking to become a sports pro, then you'll be needing a 1D camera. I would just factor that thought into your decision making.
