As per the subject, how do i get my camera to focus and meter the scene at the time the shot is taken rather than when the shoot button is pressed when I am in self-timer mode?

I press the button - run in front of the camera - and the picture is taken. However, it is always out of focus so i presume the focus is happening when i press the button rather than when the shot is taken.

I know I can manual focus or even half press on something a similar distance away and recompose. However, I would prefer to do it with the camera focussing at the time of the shot and was wondering if this is possible using AI servo or some such thing.

can't be done, you will need a wireless remote for that

Ah ok - thanks. I actually have one somewhere (i used to use it with my 300d) but I can't find the damn thing. Anyway thanks for clarifying.

I have a 450D, and you have to pre-focus manually, hit the shutter... run, and the picture should then take in focus! Remote control would be the only option for what you're asking about... talk to OptimusBri about that sort of thing... her whole 365 project is SP, and her more recent shots have all been done with a remote. Shes very good at what she does too... Clicky Link!

Hope this helps! :)

How about back button focus on your desired target then use the self timer shutter for metering/taking the shot

Not tried it, but in theory it should work

Haven't you got any friends or family? Even a passer by would do, anyone really:)

Heheh - the purpose of these self portraits was simply to experiment with various lighting configurations :) I will buy a cheapo remote trigger or put something in the spot i will be sitting in to use as a focus point.
