So i've made a big mistake, I thought it would be a good idea to sell my 60d and by a top end point and shoot this lightening the load and therefore using it more often, this hasn't happened. So now I have an RX100 mk11 that Is a great camera but I just hate using..
I'd love a 70d but think way out my league at the mo so thought I'd hang on for a bit and maybe fill the void with the 50d would this be a good substitute and would it live up to my previous slr in any way!!

nearest equivalent to the 60D without breaking the bank is the 650D really. Realistically though the price difference used is not a great deal. I had a 60d at one time and really liked it. I don't have big plates for hands so it was much better for me than the 50D and technologically superior to boot. I now use a 650D as my second body and to be honest I use it a lot more than a second body would normally be used. Why? weight, flippy screen, excellent sensor (60D,7D etc) and I have grown to really like the touchscreen for quick changing of settings (wasn't keen at first but like most things and most people I was initially too quick to judge, human nature I guess) its the body that goes everywhere in the car now and the FF only when specifically required.

50D £294,
650D £359,
60D £384.

At that price difference I would forget about the 50D tbh. Now get some popcorn for when the build quality debate starts. :exit:
 
Thanks for first thoughts, minnt and gazamonk, I'm aware that I'll be back where I was but after using this sony for 6 weeks I know that's where I want to be, it will probably cost me a wife but hay ho that seems to be the norm!! "Your making a big mistake" were her last words as I changed set up..
 
Now listen, trust me on this. The financial cost of changing back will be absolutely fine. Why? Because you have given your wife something (that,for all wifes) is beyond value. The ability to utter the words "See! I told you so". :coat:

At those prices I could get an older canon FF or a recent Nikon crop, all of which are better than the ones above.

Or just save and get 40D for well under £200. Put the difference to decent glass rather than end up with some horrible 1x-55
 
At those prices there are dozens of things you could buy but thats missing the point of the question asked really. He was asking about a replacement for his beloved 60D. So I didn't see much point turning this into a whats better thread. While the other options you suggest are fine it does risk turning the thread into a Canon vs Nikon debate and I don't know about you but Im bored s*****ss of those. Lol :canon::nikon: :naughty:

Why would a 40d be a better buy than any of the above price aside! There's 1 on classifieds is why I ask!!
 
It wouldn't, I think the point Daugridas is making that a 40D is a decent enough camera and the money saved could be put towards better lenses than a standard kit lens. Thats a good buy in the classifieds nonetheless. Do bear in mind though its a good few years behind the 60D you miss and really far behind the 70D you crave. Only you can make these choices and all we can do is offer opinions.

I'm no Canon expert but from all of the pictures I've ever seen posted the 40D seems to produce nicer images than the 50D, I guess build quality is the same so why not save the cash and get some good glass?
 
I seem to recall that a lot of 40D users were underwhelmed by the upgrade when the 50D came out. A quick retro search would come up with something I'm sure. Build Quality is identical.

Yeah the 60D was a mix of metal and poly carbonate but its still rugged enough. I know that for extreme environments and rough service (Journalism etc) build quality is important but I really dont get this poo pooing the xxD and xxxD cameras and dismissing them on those grounds. How tough a camera does the average hobbyist photographer need. For peeps like myself with smaller hands I actually prefer the 60D to the 50D for comfort.

Having run a 40D for 5/6 years with a 50D along side it for a year there isn't much to choose between them. The really improvement with the 50D was MFA, better screen and newer processor. MFA is a must shooting fast lens it's what value you place on the other benefits.
 
Does the 50D have a greater ISO range than the 40D (3200 I think)?

I had a 450D which only went to ISO 1600 and this really limited for action photos. Now I would regularly shoot ISO 3200 with the 60D with no complaints.

Yeah ive included that video in threads of this ilk before. The smashed lenses still taking decent shots always makes me laugh at the "Oh my god theres a spec of dust inside my lens!!!!" Drama queens. Lol, so what?
 
I have a 40D and though at some point to upgrade to 50D or 60D. I remember all the review stating that the 40D was the last of the real XXD serie. The 50D being made of plastic and in the race at getting higher pixel also did get lots of noise! The 40D is maybe your alternative and they sell between 125 and 160£ at the moment. I'm considering selling mine soon because I bought a mirrorless Fujifilm...
 
The 50d is the sane construction as the 40d. The 60d dispensed with the magnesium chassis but is still made to more rugged spec than the xxxD series. However see the video above and my previous posts, this doesn't mean a lot for the average hobbyist. My 650d has been to the same places and environments as my 50D, 5D and come away none the less for it. Including light showers, beaches etc. Being careful with your kit and treating it with respect is more important than the actual build tbh and of absolute paramount importance is being diligent when lens changing. Getting this wrong is more likely to be detrimental to your camera than anything else.
 
I had a go on a 50d today which seems to perform quite well, what if I threw the 7d into the mixing pot! Is this more for videos and sport than anything else! I've watched all the digital rev videos on YouTube and he seems to really rate this camera!!
 
If you liked your 60D as much as you state then go for the 550D. Its closer to 60D spec than the 40D.

E.g. Much better LCD screen, shoots 1080p 24p 30fps movies (may not be important) 18mp digic 4 sensor(60d), much higher ISO 6400 vs 1600 (2stops advantage). Lighter, dedicated Live View button, Q control LCD screen with dedicated button, +/- 5stops exp compensation.

A word of caution. The 7D is a great camera but you really really have to put in the time to learn it from the bottom up if you want to get the best out of it. The focus system and exposure control is complex but superb once mastered. I had one for a short while but just preferred the 60D it replaced because the shots Straight out of camera were more consistent but thats not knocking the 7d thats just a personal preference based on shooting style.

I seriously doubt you'd see a difference between the bodies from generic shots, especially on the internet. The main difference would be 1 - photographer, 2 - lens, 3 - processing, the body a little lower down!

The 50d is a mighty fine body, I still have mine as my back up.
