50mm 1.8 MkII / 50mm 1.4

Hello all,

I'm having a problem with my 50mm MkII, it's just not focusing with an aperture anything bigger than f5.6 anymore. Anyone had this problem? It's only a year or so old, and know it's just a cheap one, so I expect taking it somewhere to be fixed might cost more than it's really worth.

So I'm wondering whether to just buy another 1.8, or if I should save up for a bit and upgrade to the f1.4... I love the 50mm for low-light portraiture and really miss using it, as I generally always used it at 1.8 or 2.0, and it's just not worth it at the moment sadly.

Advice/thoughts? Thank you!

Have you considered the Sigma 50mm f/1.4?

It's an awesome lens for the price and has some great bokeh qualities.

Hmm, no I guess I hadn't really - it is more expensive than the Canon 1.4 though, is it worth the extra??

For the bokeh and the internal focussing I will be moving to the sigma. I actually prefer the bigger size.

It's more of a personal taste thing I'd reckon. Best bet would be to look at photos taken from each lens and make your own decision.

I went Sigma - has a nice big front element too
