The newer sigma has got hsm and it's MILES better than the Canon f1.4 imo. Build quality is superb and mine is sharp from f1.4 and has amazing contrast. It's probably the best bargain out there next to the nifty fifty

i've just bought a canon 50mm 1.4 – my 1.8 fell to pieces after an unfortunate tumble to the floor – and i am thrilled. so glad i shelled out, quicker quieter autofocusing and beautiful blurs (sorry that doesn't sound very technical!). anyway really pleased with how the shots are coming out... wish i'd upgraded before.
