50mm advice and recommendations

i curently have a nikon d60 and would like a new lens as the kit lens and cheap zoom just are not cutting it for me, ive recently started working with birds of prey and as i enjoy snapping away i need a good sharp lens for close head and full body shots of the birds.
what i was wondering would a 50mm 1.4/1.8 do the job and if so, what do you lovely people out there use, nikon, sigma or other?

Siggy 1.4 for me as it's pretty sharp wide open.
Anyway it's better to go for a 1.4 rather than 1.8 because a 1.4 lens will be sharper at f/1.8 .

Not necessarily....however as the OP has a D60, the 50mm f/1.8 will be MF only. If AF is a must, that limits you to either the new Nikon (AF-S) or the Sigma f/1.4 lenses. Just as an aside, would a fast zoom not be more suitable? Something like a Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 or similar?

assuming you're working in a falconry centre type of place then wouldn't you want something a bit longer than 50mm for birds?.
 
thanks for the replys, AF is a must, my cheap sigma telephoto is MF and although its ok i just cant seem to get focus right.
basically i want somethin that is going to give me nice detailed shots, the birds are gona be held by me or my uncle, who owns the birds, just to put on the website to show what he uses, dont want specifically a nifty but thought that might be a bit better than say a 17-50
