50mm for my Nikon D5000

Hi Guys, im looking at getting a 50mm for my Nikon D5000

but a few questions

  1. If then purchase a D90 or Higher will the same lens work.
  2. I see many 1.8 that are more affordable which do you think i should get a on a tight budget
  3. any ideas where i could get one reasonably priced :)
 
there is the 50mm 1.8g version as well which will work with the d90 and d5000

I use the 35mm F1.8 g to give me 50mm.

it still gives you 35mm focal length regardless of crop. It may give the same field of view as a 50mm on FF or 35mm though.
 
Depending on which 50mm you are getting. 50/1.8d won't autofocus on d5000 but will autofocus on the d90 afaik. Correct me if I'm wrong. The 50/1.4g will but will cost approx 2.5x more than the 50/1.8d.
 
I had a similar problem - now happily resolved with the 50mm 1.4G - a beautiful lens and if you shop around, you might be able to get a good deal on it - mine was £270ish at a show.
 
don't get the 50 1.8D, get the 35 1.8G, it will auto focus on your camera.
 
I found the 35mm 1.8 a far more useful lens than the 50mm on a crop sensor and would strongly recommend that for general use, 50mm is a bit too long unless you particularly want that focal length for head shots etc.

The 50mm f/1.8 (and this applies to Canon as well) get's held up as some sort of mythical super-lens that everyone should buy when they get a dslr. I read the reviews and all the recommendations and bought one - and it sat in my camera bag unused for 99% of the time I owned it.

Why? Simply because, as jpw says, it's just too long to be of a great deal of use on a crop sensor, a 30mm or 35mm is far more suited to those.

By all means buy one, but I'll bet you tire of it pretty quickly - most people do....

its funny you say that but on FF and ok, a 1.4 not a 1.8 its one of two lens I wouldn't be without anymore.
 
Another vote for the 35mm here.

My kit lens is never out the bag now and the 55-200mm only when I really need the reach.
 
i was shooting at an RC race yesterday (not so much the cars, more the people/characters etc) & was lucky enough to borrow some decent lenses off of a friend who was there.
of the 3 lenses he let me use for the day-
14 - 24mm f2.8
50mm f1.4
70 - 200mm f2.8

i had the 50mm on for the longest time & got what i think were the best shots of the day from me :thumbs:

i loved the 70 - 200 :love: (must start saving up)
the 14 - 24mm is pretty wide. prob have to be crareful you dont get your toes in the pic on full frame :lol:
 
thanks guys..... thats cleared that up :/ lol.

ill have a look at the price of a 35mm.

im mainly wanting one for portraits and other candid kind of photography.
