50mm got dropped

So unfortunately my 50mm f1.4 got dropped and now won't focus on mf or af. I took it to my local camera shop and they said it would be at least 80 euros to send it off for repair and would take a month or more.
Is it likely it is something that could be repaired, or am I better off buying a new nifty, or a new replacement.
 
if it's 80 euros then it's ok to have it repaired rather than buying a new one. Out of interest, how did it fall and which part of the lens touched the ground first, and did it have a hood on ?
 
Have you tried Canon directly and see if they can give an estimate for repairing the lens ?

Might help decide if it's worth repairing
 
Does one get camera gear insured independendly of house insurance?
 
Thanks for the responses. To follow up, no I am not insured, and the lens was dropped off a coffee table and fell onto a wooden floor, I'm not sure where it landed on the lens, it had both lens cap and end cap on, but no hood.
It would be 80 euros just to send it off, before cost of reparation. Perhaps it is a good idea to contact canon direct, to see if they could estimate a price.
Note to other togs, don't leave lenses on coffee tables when girlfriends are present with shopping bags.

cam1986 - its an option - house hold has excess and might not cover the lens/camera equipment fully, plus the accident may not be covered or your premiums go up as a result....

I've got a lens damaged from a fall from my bag (zip gave way) and Photoguard insurance... just awaiting to see what they say on repair/replace. Probably repair. No quotes as they wanted 10-25ukp before to look at, and if fixed with them, then the repairers would minus that off the cost.

Essentially keep all equipment in a bag or around your neck :D

Hope you find a place to repair for less... I take it the lens is worth a fair amount? 80 euros vs x amount - if the amount is close just buy new...?
