50mm lenses for canon crop.

Morning everyone.

I'm after a little advice. I've got the canon 50mm 1.8 which is great for static stuff, but as soon as my little girl starts moving it sruggles to lock focus.
I always use back button focus and use either AI servo or continuous AF. Its very frustrating as i'm mssing out on some shots due to missing focus while it hunts.
Also manual focus is a nightmare due to the tiny & loose focus ring.

What I'm wondering is how much difference would i notice with say the 50mm with USM make?
Obviously its quite a bit more than the 1.8 (not as bad as the 1.2 mind!) but im getting annoyed with the 1.8

Thinking it could be useful for general portraits etc which i'll be doing more of this year.

Whats peoples thoughts?

Yes, it's a lot more reliable compared to the f/1.8II, but I have read that the Sigma 50mm is just as good, and some say it's a better lens.
I had the f/1.8 when I first started but felt it was holding me back, due to the fact that I too had got it to shoot my young son and it did cause more missed shots.
I do know plenty of others that love it (for what it is) but for lowlight moving shots I found the keeper rate jumped up quite a bit with the f/1.4.
As far as IQ goes I don't think there is much in it, but IQ isn't everything.
