Yes
I know it is another nifty fifty question but I feel I need a bit of advice on the following.

I'm looking to change from my 35mm 1.8 DX lens as I find when using it for partrait stuff I have to get just a bit too near the subject, being a big lad with a big camera can be a bit intimidating.

Coupled with the fact that ever since I read about the Sigma 1.4 being "the sharpest lens I've ever had" I the best gear of 2009 thread it has kind of stuck with me. So I think I need a 50mm instead of the 35mm, It would also fit my other 77mm filters, and I I do end up full frame in years to come It will be one less DX lens to move on.

So is there any preference to stay with Nikon or is the Sigma really as amazing as has been stated by others ?

Thanks in advance.

Si.

I tried them both and bought the siggy.

Great lens and one for sale in classifieds.

I have the Sigma (on a Canon) and I have no complaints.

Maybe you could Google your way to some reviews? I read a review some time ago comparing the Sigma and the Nikon and they preferred the Sigma, but other reviewers may view things differently.

One thing to watch out for is dof at f1.4. On trying my Sigma 50mm f1.4 someone dismissed it as either front or back focussing but it was clearly his technique which was at fault as he was clearly moving as he pressed the shutter button and any movement of camera or subject at f1.4 is going to have an effect.

You went for it then:)

Yep ... I don't hang about !!! Cheers for the heads up, it must be fate !!!

Simon, I bought one second hand about 1 month ago, it too was 12 months old paid £280 so if it has no marks etc I think you may have a bargain.
Check the review here if you need more convincing.

Dave

I see its in your camera list already..LOL

Cheers for the heads-up Dave ... It was one of those spur of the moment things, I don't think I'll regret it judging by the reviews I've read it will be a great lens for me.

I'm picking up the Sigma tomorrow morning ... Looking forward to it, I like new toys !!!

Thanks for the link Ryan I did read through and also http://www.flickr.com/groups/nikond700/discuss/72157612521172308/ which just pushes the Sigma ahead for me.

In any case I picked up the lens this morning and have been playing with it a home. I don't think it has the front focus problem that you had with yours but I'm not too certain how to check. I've been playing with the very small DOF at 1.4 on objects close up and it's pin sharp.

I should get some pictures posted up in the next few days. If there is a test for front focusing could you let me know please.

Cheers

Simon
