ok then is a 50mm prime on a crop as good as a 85mm prime on a crop sensor (sony a450)

i so-pose what im asking is shall i save up for a 85mm are they that good! on a crop ?and is the 50mm on a crop the equlanvant of 85mm on a full frame
does that make sence ??:help:
 
I think that the "crop factor" of your Sony is x1.5, so 50mm x 1.5= 75mm and 85mm x 1.5 = errrrr.... hang on ..... 127.5mm

So the field of view of a 50mm lens on your Sony ends up as 75mm and that of an 85mm lens ends up as 127mm.

As for which is best... that depends upon what field of view you want.

I would suggest starting with a 50mm as it's a really good effective length on a crop camera for portraits...85mm might be too long. Remember that whilst the focal length of a 50mm length lens will be similar to that of a 75mm portrait lens, the depth of field will be greater so if you want to replicate the look of a full frame camera, you will need a fast 50mm lens e.g. 50/1.4.

Crop factor only applies on crop bodies. On a full frame sensor, there's no crop factor. And I would suggest u go for the 50 or 35. It's better on a crop body in my opinion.

yes i think from nearly all comments sounds like 50mm is the way to go for now, i have 1.7 minota 50mm and i think you anwered my next question rallly on weather i should get 85 i supose in a nut shell the 85 is the 50mm in crop !!

yes thank you i dont know why but i thought i was mising out but untill i go full frame theres no piont in a 85mm the penny has fallen

A previous poster said that the DoF will be greater... If the camera is the same and you frame the shot the same all lenses have the same DoF. I think that's right.

The framing is the thing to concentrate on. If you prefer the framing one lens gives you over another then that's your choice and the one to go for.

I always found 50mm on a crop a little awkward. Not long enough for street photography/outdoor portraits and not short enough for indoor use :shrug:

Ended up getting a 30mm and an 85mm!
