50mm stuck at f/1.4

I suppose if it wont stop down that's pretty conclusive, tried pressing the DoF preview button?

I suppose the only option is to take it back.

Sounds like the thumbwheel is locked?

How would I unlock it Steve, or is that something for the shop / canon to look at?

I think he's referring to the big control wheel on the back of your camera - the one you use to set the aperture in Manual mode. If the aperture is stuck on f/1.4 in all modes then he's probably wrong (if I've understood him correctly) because you only use that wheel in M mode.

Incidentally, that might be an interesting test. If you put the camera in P mode, can it set an aperture other than f/1.4? Is it just the manual aperture setting (in A or M mode) that doesn't work?

I had the same problem the other week on my 5D3 and Canon 70-200 2.8, I had my back dial locked and didn't realise for a while why I couldn't alter anything. After about half an hour I suddenly realised and moved the button to unlock it. Good job it was hot that day cause it hid how red I was with embarrassment. Bit of a Doh! moment.
