55-250 damaged and won't zoom out fully

Not sure if this is the right section for this, but I'm sure it can be moved if not. A few months ago my 55-250 lens was dropped and landed in a shallow muddy puddle. Once it had had a chance to dry out everything seemed fine other than the zoom feeling a bit rougher than normal, however recently it seems to have got worse and the lens barrel will not retract fully. When focussed at infinity it will not zoom out past about 80mm, and if it is focussed at a closer distance I can zoom out fully to 55mm, but cannot focus back to infinity (the photo below probably explains this better).

Has anyone had this happen before, or have any ideas on how to fix it?
 
Sounds like either something is damaged / come loose when it was dropped or it's got debris inside it.

Either way it looks like it needs to go for repair, but the cost might be more than the lens is worth.
 
I agree about the cost of repair being more than the lens is worth, just wondered if anyone had managed to fix something like this themselves. If not I can put up with losing the range from 55-80mm, as other than that the lens works fine.

Have a look on you tube, I suspect there will be someone on there has stripped one down.

You've nothing to loose really or alternatively sell is as a faulty unit for a reduced price and purchase a new one ?
 
If it was muddy water, it's amazing what kind of crap that can deposit inside a mechanism like a lens. Sounds like something is gumming up the works and that it needs a clean. Given the good price on these lenses, it may be more economical just to buy a new one.
 
Thanks for the replies everyone, the lens has now unstuck itself somehow, although it sounds like there is something rattling inside it, which could have been what was stuck. Might have to use it as an excuse to upgrade to a 70-200 f4L at some point :thumbs:
