I have a Canon 550D, it's a fantastic camera. Very similar to the 7D in terms of the sensor and photo quality, although the 7D is built like a tank and almost double the price.
I personally would like to upgrade to a full frame camera, but you cannot go far wrong with the 550D in my experience. If you are on Flickr, you can have a look at images taken with a 550D.
Pop into a Jessops and see how each of them feel.

550D will look and behave a lot like your 350d (they are both xx0D for a reason). In other terms both have the smallest viewfinder, about 3fps, and tiny body with rather awkward controls. Unless you are happy with that xxD can offer some improvements, like bigger VF, 6fps, more comfortable body, stronger built, etc. 40D might be enough, I really couldn't find anything much better 50D. The important question is what are your lenses, and can they cut the mustard?
I had a 350d and loved it, but now use a 40d and 50d.
I got a 550d last summer. The video feature was nice, but I was a bit dissapointed with pretty much everything else so i sent it back.
Just my 2c of course but if you dont desperately need/want video, 40d all day long.

40D/50D is a different class of camera altogether. You get extra controls, top-side LCD, magnesium shell etc.. 550D is more modern but consumer-oriented.
A big part of it is ergonomics, which one fits your hands better. For very small hands, the 40D might feel big. But I have big hands with long fingers and 40D was so much better for me than my 400D ever was. And once you get used to all the extra controls it's hard to go back (I gave the 400D to my son and I cringe every time I use it).

Really depends what you want it for!
The 550d and 600D are more modern with better video capabilities.
The 40 and 50D have overall better build quality and better ergonomics.
I like bigger camera bodies myself!
I've owned a 600D and although it's a great all around camera, I don't care much for video shooting, so if I had to start again, I'd choose a second hand 50D without a doubt.
