hi there
i have just bought the eos 550d lens kit,and am now looking at alternate lenses.the canon lenses are beutiful but out of my price range right now as im of to college and a single mum.As you can imagine the camera i just got took a fair bit of saving.Will sigma lenses fit this model as iv heard else where they dont.
any info would be great

Yes they will (just check for Canon Fit), i have been using a Sigma 18-200 DC OS on mine for a year now and with good results.

Glad to help :), some of the Sigmas offer good value for money. Might also be worth taking a look at some of the Tamron range.
 
I also have a 550D, the best lens I have bought was the Tamron SP 70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di VC and in terms of value for money, it cant be beat imo but it also depends on what your shooting :)
 
Had my 550d since christmas 2010. I've gone through the kit lens 18-55, a canon 70-300 mk3 and a tamron 28-300 VC and so far have resold them all. I've now got a 100mm L 2.8 macro, a 100-400mm L and a walkabout 18-125mm sigma for when I cant be bothered to keep changing. Whichever lens you do go for try and get a stabilised version. Was disappointed by the 70-300 which didnt have IS.

Is that a stabilised one? Looking for a walkabout for my 50D
 
What is it your after? something to replace the kit lens with that has better build/autofocus/appature or something to give you more range?

If its the latter then the Canon 55-250mm and 50mm 1.8 are really not expensive at all(by lens standards anyway), you could get them both new from Amazon for £200. In terms of image quality both of them and your kit lens are really not bad at all, much better than most third party lenses at a similar price point.

There is no such thing as a Mk3 Canon 70-300.

There is a Canon 70-300 IS USM however, and its a stunning lens and i doubt you'd have sold it on. And it has IS.

You sure you didnt have the Canon 75-300 mk3? That lens is truly rubbish.
