550D battery menu and grip question

Hi guys,

A while ago I purchased a battery grip for my 550D, it doesn't seem to be displaying battery info, even if I use genuine canon batteries. It just turns off without warning when they run out....

I opened up the tray at the bottom of the grip and only positive and negatives are connected to the three connectors on the battery tray. The centre connectors are not connected to anything!

Both batteries share a common ground but the battery tray has a different positive connection for both batteries.


Also is there a battery menu for the 550D? I've seen that other Canon cameras have a menu which shows current shutter count on each battery in the grip.

Is it a genuine Canon grip or aftermarket one ?

Where did you buy it from - could you take it back to check another grip to make sure they are the same ?
 
I've got a gripped 550, it was a really cheap grip (about £35 off ebay) to find out if I liked the feel with the grip on. Then the plan was to get a canon grip if I did like it. However the cheap grip feels really good and does what any other costlier grip would. Including showing battery info, focus point selection etc and comes with the AA battery adapter. Very pleased so far and until it dies I'll stick with it. Cant see the point of getting a canon for £100 plus for the same thing.
 
It wasn't a Canon one, but I did pick the closest looking one to the Canon one (was £50). Purchased on ebay..

Modchild, how many electrical connectors does your battery tray have (where you put the two batteries on)?

The quality is great, looks the same as the body and well made other than showing no battery info..

I got mine from ebay seller camera-acc for £35.95 with 4 batteries and including p&p. If you have a close look at my pic from the link you will see the position of the terminals.

I am able to see all of the menus, the screen with battery info and does everything else as a more expensive one.

If yours has the same terminals then positioning I think you may have a faulty one. All the aftermarket grips I have seen show the same info. In fact, I like this one so much I'm going to get a 7D version in the near future and see how that goes.

I'd like to see this secret battery menu, does it only appear when you have a grip installed?

The only time I purchased non-cannon and this happens, typical.

Just looked at your pics. I'm surprized that you can see all the terminals on the bottom of the battery holder. Mine is fully encased in plastic underneath so you cant see where the terminals run. If I was you I'd be tempted to return it and have a look for another one. Maybe you were just unlucky with that one or maybe its the way they have been made. Either way I think there are better grips out there, just hope you get lucky next time.
 
Sorry I removed the cover to check the connections, just a few screws :).

I'm asking a big, big favour but if you feel comfortable and have the time to remove the few screws under the tray and photo the connections that would be most handy!
