550d vs 60d?

Hi all, I have seen 60d's going pretty cheap but just wondering is it worth the bother? I would prefer the 7d but still a bit out my price range. Also I have heard of people having focus issues with 60d.

I have a 60D, neber had focus issues in fact it tracks jet planes very well with my 70-200mm f4L.
It is certainly a better camera than the 550D
 
The Canon 550D is a superb camera from what I hear. I haven't owned one but I want to pick one up for a secondary camera.

I've owned the 60D, it too is a superb camera, but I really can't help but think that it is aimed at those wanting to make videos from their DSLR.

My opinion is to stick with your 550D because I don't think you'll notice a big change from purchasing a 60D or 7D.

I'm not saying that a 60D or a 7D is not better than a 550D because of course normally the newer, the better. But I just don't think you will notice a lot of improvements from your 550D.

My advice is to wait another year before upgrading your body otherwise you might end up losing out.

I wouldnt say the 60D is really geared up for making films, There are cheaper lower specced xxxD bodies better for video.
As good as the 550D is and it is. The 60D will outperform it in almost all areas.
 
To be honest I have never done film on my 550, I think next upgrade would be upto full frame! But well above my price range at present. I just want to have improved af and maybe functionality. As for image quality I doubt I will get better from a cropped.

No such focus issues here from my 60D, image wise it makes no sense at all for you to upgrade to a 60d or a 7d if its just the image quality.

The sensor is essentially the same in all 3 and can produce superb image quality.

a 5d3 or whatever would be my next step up if i ever do.

For me the 60D does everything I need it too but if you don't need more than the 550d offers you then its just wasting money

John, have you considered buying a 5D Classic? You can pick one up in good condition from here for around £400GBP and it's full frame. You may be able to offer a lower price and get a better deal.

I switched from crop to full frame and love it. Although I do want to buy a 550D as my crop sensor so I can get some more length in my telephoto lenses.

One word of warning: if you have EF-S lenses, I believe these won't work on the 5D, only EF lenses do. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Put it this way: ever since switching to full frame, I always want to have full frame. The iso performance is so much better, the image quality is better as it's a bigger sensor, focal lengths are correct etc.

Definitely do consider a 5D Classic. Go on flickr, type in the camera name under search and you can see shots taken with that camera. You'll see that a Canon 5D Classic produces some outstanding shots.

I only bring up the 5D Classic because if I was going to upgrade with that rough budget, I would take the 5DC rather than another crop sensor, but that's just my own preference.

its like you say, full frame to crop brings benifits for both to the table.

Personally if image quality is of your issue then lens and technique would be my main points to start with before chopping bodies in
 
I own a canon 70-200 f2.8, tamron 17-50 f2.8 and a sigma 10-20 so I think I have a good collection of lenses.... My technique is improving just not sure if I have reached my limits with this camera?

fair point there the 2.8 is a great lens.

I will be honest, in my own opinion of course there are people who take phenominal images using the sensor from the 7d , 60d , 550d etc and they surpass what I can achieve and surpass what I have seen from some people using full frame.

Only you can say if "you" believe it is holding you back, if you think its sub par and it's worth changing then you have your answer, its like myself, I very nearly purchased a 5Dmk2 with some extra bits thrown in for £900, whilst this was a good deal I didn't think it was a deal breaker to throw the towel in on one of my 60D's as I am happy with the images they produce at 3200 and even 6400 after I have had a play so seemed a waste of £900 to me.

But that is me and my preference, as with cars and everything else in life, its the users preference that matters most.
 
So, reading the above posts, is going to a 5D Classic a better and wiser option than getting a 60D?
 
I've had both the 550D and the 60D and I found them both fantastic cameras. The 550D was my first dslr and I got some great photos from it and it fitted my hand like a glove even though I'd never held one before I bought it. The only time I found it limiting was when shooting macro as the AF was a bit slow but apart from that it was great.

After a while I bought a 7D with the idea of using the 550D as backup but after a while I got so used to the ergonomics of the 7D the 550D became a bit fiddly. After a bit of body juggling over the next few months I ended up with a 5D3 and 60D and the wife ended up with my 550D. The 60D ergonomics were similar to the 5D3 and I found it very easy to use and was very happy with the output from it.

I eventually swapped my 60D for another 7D, primarily for the AF system as I'd started shooting BIF and found it much easier with the focus system of the 7D. However, I was rather disappointed at the high ISO output from the 7D and wish I'd kept the 60D.
 
I love the 60D and to Raincloud, really and truely there is no such thing as a better option really.

Better is a relative term to the user, to me the 5D classic would be smoked everytime by my 60D, the 5D2 and 3 would be upgrades but again, the 2 in my eyes only majorly so in the high iso dept which i am happy using the 60D upto 6400 at a push.
