Hi, i'm planing to buy a flash this weekend. there are a few used ones available. i was think about 580ex mkI for just over £200. But i could save £50 on a 550ex. or pay an extra £60 for the 580ex II.

I'll be using it on my 5d mkII. not sure what will be most beneficial/cost worthy.

If anyone has experience or thoughts on using these products, it'll really help. thanx.....

I have the 580ex II and its fantastic!! super powerful and loads of settings! i would reccomend it!
When will you be using the flash?

If you can afford the 580EXII the recharge times alone make the extra cost worthwhile!

I too use the 580EXII and i love it. I went to that from a 430EX and the difference in power and features is amazing!

Thanx, I thought most *** would recommend the mkII version. My query is whether it's worth the extra £60 compared to the mki. In terms of feature and recharge speed etc.

It's better built, more powerful, weather proof and has faster recharge times. It really does come down to whether you need those attributes and whether YOU think an extra £60 is worth the upgrade..

Also have a look at the Nissin Di866 unless you are a "designer name" snob. It does virtually all the 580 does for half the cost. I use one and am very pleased with its power, usablility and performance.

well, i definitely know i'm going the canon route. as i know i shouldnt be let down anywhere. (maybe a little in price) i think i'm gonna go for the original 580ex, as its already 200 quid out of my pocket, my earnings from photography are slim at the moment, so this will tide me over until i not a second flash unit.
has anyone had any problems using it on 5d mkii, or have any tips using the flash in general?

I have 430, 550 and 580 mk1. Well, all three do a good job, but 580 is clearly the best. 550 is very fiddly to adjust both the settings and the head position. Hence, it is only ever used a slave. 580mk2 is arguably slightly better, particularly if used in wet conditions. I couldn't justify the extra cost for it. I've never had any trouble with any of my flashes.

I use a 430 and 580MKI. Both are great to use and easy to set-up.
I would recommend either of those to you. I've been tempted for a while to pick up a 550EX.

I use two 580Ex and a 430EX ... The new MK2's have stronger feet and slightly more efficient circuitry. But I would rather have the money saving....

i've worked with the 550 for a long time as well as the 580ex2, both highly useable (i'd recommend the 550 to anyone who gets a good deal on it). the 430ex just isn't able to keep up with anything remotely demanding imo.
