580ex II Focus light

Just wondering if anyone knows anything about getting the red focusing light on the 580 Ex II to fire when shooting on manual, if i set my camera to auto and ettl on the flash, the light fires allowing the camera to focus in the dark. IF I set it to manual and the flash to ettl. no light fires so I cannot focus in the dark.

My boss has the older verison of my flash and it works for him when shooting on manual.

Any help would be greatly appreciated from all you strobists!

Got it sorted, turns out it only comes on in one shot mode, not ai servo!
