5D Autofocus points and metering question

Hi all,
I am doing a lot of gig photography and am generally pleased with the 'keepers'.
However I am puzzled by how many are really badly underexposed. Obviously the lighting can be extreme with sudden changes but I nearly always use a single point focus point. I also use spot metering and try and focus on the face.

Am I right in thinking that spot metering works only on the selected AF point? If so I don't understand why the camera is picking up so much light that it badly underexposes.

Any thoughts?

Spot metering will only work on the middle point, the circle you see is the spot that is used.. i think... if you use an outer point to focus then start metering it will be that middle area you are metering for..
