5D focussing screen

There's a few specks of dust in the viewfinder of my 5D so I had a quick clean of the focussing screen but this just seems to have moved the specks around rather than removed them.

Is it worth buying a replacement screen or will the dust be within the camera and probably won't make a difference ? Anyone bought a replacement with no luck ?

Don't really want to waste cash on a replacement if it won't fix the problem.

It's not a major issue, just a niggle really and you can only see the spots if you look for them.

Yep physically removed it and gave it a dust. It didn't look too bad which makes me think the dust is elsewhere :eek:
 
You probably need to remove the screen above the focus screen, quite a bit more involved, delicate and fiddly but I'm pretty ham fisted and managed it.

Good how to here http://www.ascent-design.com/photo/Clean5D/ but I did a few things different, I pulled the focus screen shims right out of the camera and set them aside and the guy that wrote that says under no circumstances rub or wipe the superimposed display screen, I did, I couldn't get the crud off using a blower so I wiped over it with a lenscloth and it's fine.

Also, I ended up wiping the bottom of the prism with the lenscloth too as there was some stubborn dust there, that's probably a huge no-no but doesn't seem to have affected my camera at all.
 
Dust can be very difficult to spot.

You could give it a clean with some sort of cleaning solution or rinse it in warm water and dry it off with a couple of blasts from a Rocket. Of course that wont remove anything that's further up in the camera.
 
For anyone that's interested I gave this a go.

A bit fiddly and probably not for the faint-hearted but definitely seems to work. I managed to remove nearly all of the dust spots bar one - and I think that's actually a very,very small scratch left by be on the indicator plate after replacing it. Just looks like a dust spot though but won't shift. I can live with that though, certainly better than before.

Glad you gave it a shot and glad it was a success.
I scratched my indicator screen thing at the edge because I used unprotected tweezers when I did it. Doesn't show in the viewfinder though.
My girlfriend has a 5Dc too and a couple years ago she had a little insect in her viewfinder, I tried taking focus screen out and everything and couldn't get to it, musta been up under the indicator screen, how the hell it got there I have no idea!
 
If you buy another screen (highly recommend the gridded one btw) - it will come with a special pair of tweezers. Only ever use those, as anything else - particularly fingers - will likely cause some sort of damage (probably permanent).
The thing is very delicate, so I would only go as far as blasting some air to blow off the dust.

It's really not that delicate, I breathed on mine wiped it with a lens cloth and scratched the edge with tweezers and there's no noticeable detriment through the VF.
