5D MII Auto ISO Limitations

I'm really annoyed with the limitations of the 5D MII when it comes to the auto ISO features (something Nikon has had for ages!).

If you're shooting manual and have auto ISO set, then it automatically just sets it to 400 - alternatively, if you're using AV mode, it doesn't give you the option to set a minimum shutter speed! It automatically assumes that matching your focal length will be adequate (ie. if you have a 35mm lens on, it sets it to 1/35 automatically, or if you have a 200mm it sets it to 1/200).

Anyone else really annoyed by this? Seems like it could be a really quick firmware fix, but I haven't read or heard anything from Canon, even though this has obviously been a concern and there is even a petition for it.

I don't really have any issue in the semi-auto modes,c but it would be nice to be able to use auto-iso in manual, seems to me like the obious time to use it!
 
I was quite excited at the auto ISO addition when I bought the 5d2, I never bother with it now as I shoot almost entirely in manual mode.

Yeah, you could go full manual and set the ISO yourself, but that's beyond the point here - I'm talking about the limitations of the Auto ISO feature.

With Nikon you can set a minimum shutter speed, and it won't go below that unless it's at the max ISO and it absolutely has to.

Yeah, I do sometimes as well, but if you need to take quick shots in a changing environment (light variations and moving people/things), then this feature is very useful.

not sure thats right i think when you max out it wont go any higher/lower i could be wrong though:shrug:

What i meant is that if it reaches the max ISO and it's still too dark, it'll drop it down from the minimum 1/80 shutter speed to 1/40, or whatever is required.

That's what i remember it doing, when I had the D700...
 
I'm in the 'manual' camp. Have absolutely no thoughts about the camera setting it for me.

Hardly ever use Tv or Av either these days, almost always manual exposure..

I'll sign the petition though ;)

Dono anymore lol.... that's what i keep asking myself.

I like the feel of the Canon, but it's lacking on features I really liked on the Nikon...

so how big a system did you change to go canon if i,m honest and i really wanted to change :shake: i could,nt afford it all those bits and bobs that take a fair while to build up cost lots off pennies :shrug:


edit you,ve only got 2 lenes you could change back real quick and nobody would know :lol: :thumbs:

I also have a Canon 35mm L f/1.4 & a 430EX II.

I'd lose lots of money if I switch now.... and if I did switch, I'd go for the D3s.

I'd have to sell it all for 3500 or more...

don,t know about losing lots of money, second hand gear is holding its price well at the moment. but i like your choice D3s. :love:
 
I use mainly in manual, but the feature sounds good so have singed the petition. Only 130 so far, how many would be needed to get there attention?
 
Not too sure how many are needed... but this is a basic feature, so Canon should be on top of this - we shouldn't have to keep telling them.
 
If it wasn't for their lenses that I love so much, it'd be really hard to stay with Canon....

Well, I did hear a rumor that Nikon was allowing Canon users to trade in their gear for Nikon gear, but I don't know if there is much truth to that.

I was looking at the 1D Mark IV and it has basically all the things I want, which the 5D Mark II is lacking... but with a hefty price tag ....

Although, this way I can keep my lenses and just sell the 5D...

The GF is going to kill me though haha
