So I was just snapping away at home trying out different settings to familiarise myself with the 5D and i had it pointing straight down and the mirror falls out and gets stuck in the 70-200. I was so anxious i thought the back element was gonna get stratched by it, but luckily the its in quite a deep recess, so i managed to take the lens of to find the mirror floating around loose with the corners chipped off. im so annoyed, i know kit failure happens to everyone but now I have the hassle of taking it back to jacobs as its under their preowned warranty, but i know what they are gonna say and try and get out of fixing it. they are gonna say that i dropped it and their warranty doesnt cover neglect or accidental damage. but im gonna fight them tooth and nail on this!

just letting off some steam! :bang:

It's a known issue and Canon had a recall on this. They will no doubt fix it free of charge. Contact Canon direct.

EDIT: LINK added

Canon, dropping to bits...............whats new:lol:

By the way they do come out but only when you change em supposedly:thumbs:

thanks for the advice

i just hate having to sort this stuff out, and although jacobs have been very good everytime i have dealt with them, i just dont want it becoming a case of my word against theres.

Bloody hell, hope it doesn't happen to me!

check the link that Bill Roberts posted, its quite helpful. Canon say they will repair it free of charge and will improve the fitting. but the way it detached on mine it could of easy scratched the lens

Canon fixed mine even though it was not showing any signs of coming loose.

They will fix it and take your lens in too and ask them to check it over at the same time.

To be honest, I would not even contact Jacobs about it. I'd rather then manufacturer deal with it and they indeed will.

It will also be cleaned and checked over, so it's all good.

I sent my 5D into AJ Johnstone in Scotland (approved Canon service centre) for a sensor clean under warranty. When it came back, I saw that they'd fitted the mirror upgrade - a clip at either side of the mirror to hold it in place. My mirror had never come loose prior to this :)

They also gave the mirror and focusing screen a spring clean - a few annoying dust bunnies and hairs had gone - so a  for their customer service :)

As this is quite a common problem, I would recommend everyone to get it done as its free, and not to hang around until it happens. I very very narrowly managed to avoid damaging my most expensive lens.

Prevention is better than cure as they say!

You're quite right of course. But to be honest it seems to be a much more common problem in sub tropical areas than in Europe. Possibly more to do with humidity I guess?

But as it's a free fix, and Canon will almost certainly clean the sensor and check the camera over in general it seems silly not to send it in.

cheers

you would think that!!!!!

so been on the phone to colchester camera about 6 times this week :gag:

they said they will replace the mirror, but they will not do anything else at all. In my case the mirror chipped and left small shards of glass inside and I argued back and forth that it should be their responsibility to clean it as it happened as a result of their product fault and not due to my negligence. I explained to them that I am not trying to get a free sensor clean out of them, but it is unacceptable to just attach a new mirror+housing and leave bits of glass all over the place. The lady only repeated the some garb that you get from all customer service people "I understand what you are saying, infact you are making perfect sense, but as I am not programmed or authorised to see it from the customers point of view, I will have to fob you off and repeat the previous sentence till you get the message and realise you have no chance." She kept going back to the technician who wouldnt come to the phone, and eventually I gave up and told them to send my camera back as it is, as i'll be taking it up directly with Canon as these guys clearly don't want to go the extra bit to keep a customer happy. I then asked if they could provide a report or estimate breakdown... "computer says nooooo!", and I asked how am I expected to pay for a repair when I dont even know what they diagnosed!! Eventually I got them to fax me a quote and I took it to Jacobs who were quite helpful. They understood my situation, the camera has 11months warranty and i'll find out what their stance is on this, but the salesperson said they should take care of it and pick up the £192 bill. In the meantime I am asking for a loan of a 5D to keep me going.

grit and determination is a must have in situations like this. :bang:

I'd be going absolutely ape if they tried this. Personally I'd have sent it to directly Canon at Elstree but that's irrelevant anyway. In theory a Canon authorised repairer should be just as good.
They should fix the mirror under the recall and obviously clean it out of any shards of glass as a matter of course and all this should be totally free of charge to you.

Do kick up a fuss about this because it sounds like absolutely apalling customer service. I would imagine the head of Canon UK wouldn't be too happy to hear about it either, I'd make sure he did.

Best of luck with it!

cheers

Thanks for your support Bill. Unfortunately Elstree referred me directly to Colchester Camera. I won't take it lying down though, if I have no recourse from Jacobs then i'll be taking it up directly with Canon UK.

I would either send it back to Canon RCC or Lehmans or Fixation.

They should also send you a UPS postal label so it can be sent back FOC, when mine was returned for the same problem, (mirror had not fell out though), they paid shipping both ways and fixed mirror and cleaned camera and sensor.

I cannot comment on Colchester cameras but have personal experience of Canon RCC, fixation and lehmans and would recommend them all my personal preference is with lehmans.

This fix/recall is done irrespective of if the camera is in warranty or not.

Hope you get sorted.
