5D mirror fix

Wondering if someone can advise me on this. Looking at getting a used 5D classic, have seen Canon offers the repair for the mirror if there should be issues for free.

Can you just send it in even if the mirror hasnt come loose?

If I buy used and the previous owner hasnt had it done, can I send it in without original receipt?

I would be interested in hearing the answer to this too, as I own a 5D mk1 (I think it's one of the earlier models) and so far have had no problems with the mirror. I asked at my local LCE, but they weren't even aware of the mirror issue!

There was a letter in Amateur Photographer a couple of weeks ago about this. The writer had his fail while on holiday.

IIRC AP published a response from Canon UK. Canon are offering the repair to all the affected 5Ds, whether or not they've failed yet.

I've plans to get mine sorted, but haven't got round to it yet.
 
We had a mirror fall out of a 5d classic during a show last NYE, luckily we had some super glue to hand.

I glued the mirror back in and we carried on shooting with it, sent it off to Canon and had it back inside a week with the new mirror assembly fitted.
 
Thanks guys, did you have to send in with the receipt etc to prove you were the original owner?
 
I never had to send anything other than the fault form I downloaded from canons cps site.
