5D Mk1 losing all settings

Has anyone experienced this problem with their 5D Mk1?

A couple of hours into shooting my first solo wedding I found the camera had returned itself to factory default settings. RAW had switched back to large JPG, AF beep gone from off to on, all custom functions back to default. I quickly flicked through to set the camera up again only to find that a few shots later it had reset itself again. It seems as though whenever it powers down, either in standby or by switching it off, it loses all settings.

I wondered whether it might be the internal battery but the interesting thing is that the date/time stay correct.

I’ve just got this camera back from Fixation a couple of weeks ago after having a new focus point illumination screen fitted. It seems a bit strange that its just started playing up as this was its first proper outing after coming back.

Thank god for backup kit is all I can say. I managed the rest of the wedding with just my 5D Mk2. :)

could it be the little battery that saves settings has drained and needs replacing?
 
That was my first thought. Strange that it doesn't lose the date/time though. Also strange because the camera is only a year old and those things usually last many years. Possible though.

When using mine I find I often press the menu button by mistake with my nose....(pause for laughter)

From then on it's a matter of chance which other buttons get pressed in the same way. Could that be happening? Clear Settings is in there somewhere.

Haven't pressed Format yet, but it's probably only a matter of time.
 
The first time I assumed something like that had happened as I had been swapping between cameras. However I did a quick test where I set everything up, switch off and then switch on. Everything had defaulted so I'm quite sure something is up with it.
