5D MK2 / New Gen Nikon upgrade

long time since I posted on the forum...

Im considering upgrading my Nikon D7000. I have been doing quite a few photographic Jobs for money over the past year or so and have alot lined up in the coming months(weddings etc)

I have used a friends 5D MK2 and to be honest if I found the AF to be okay and nowhere near as bad as I had heard about prior to me switching to Nikon

Issues I had experienced with Canons 17-55 2.8 lens sort of threw me off the notion of buying another canon a few years back.

Im basically debating between waiting on Nikons new rumoured full frame camera or potentially buying a 5D MK2 and selling my nikon gear to help fund a few good lenses.

Any ideas would be appreciated. Im quite impatient so the chances are a 5D MK2 is on the cards. The types of photography I'd be doing is mainly portraiture/events/weddings

There will be arguments for & against both systems from posters who know significantly more about the technical aspects than I do however I did want to add that, as a 5D2 user I can say I'm more than happy with it - I don't have any issues with the autofocus on it, it performs fine for what I need it to. Granted it doesn't catch my 4 year old too well when she's lurching towards me but then she's usually too close anyway :)
 
What about a D700?
 
I had thought about a D700 but the 5D probably would suit me as I wouldnt be doing anything that would tax the AF system. Love the thought of having full frame video too as it might be something I take an interest to and the extra MP for nature shots. I will be using a friends 5D for the next few days and hopefully that will allow me to make my mind up (I have also used the D700)
 
Go for the D700.

You'll need a back up/second body if you are planning on using the camera for work, and you obviously already have Nikon lenses. If you can afford to get the D700 without selling the D7000 it's a no brainer! :)

If you haven't properly delved into video as yet, you are going to notice very little difference between that shot on a 1.5 crop as opposed to full frame.
 
The extra mega pixels for nature will not be that noticeable.

I have images taken on the D700 that are printed at 4 foot by 3 foot that look amazing.

Pixel peeping is an overrated sport.

Having said that you should buy what you like, however you have some nice Nikon lenses already. Just be certain you are not changing just for the sake of changing.
 
I always have a second camera with me for work. Although in fairness its probably not a good as it should be. A Canon 450D haha. Though havent needed to use it and have a good friend that has lent me his 5D MK2 before which has put this notion into my head. Photography isn't really a job for me as I work full time elsewhere aswell but I have committed to quite a few jobs and I had planned on buying a new camera around next feb anyways.
 
i could have bought a brand new nikon d700 for 1349 very recently but missed the boat as I decided to wait on whatever their next rumoured FF camera is(D600 apparently)

i also bought a new ipad so need to watch the funds haha....

Just bite the bullet and pay the extra for the D700, it's about time you got a big boy camera. :naughty:

There's very little wrong with the auto focus on the 5DII as long as you know how to use it and understand it's limitations.

There are several good reasons to opt for a D700 in this case, the quality or performance of the 5DII is not one of them.

So you don't think that the D700 auto focus system is vastly superior?

Waiting for possible announcements is a bit of a fools game.

The D700 does not stop being a great camera when another one comes out.

I don't think that I'm playing 'how long is your willy', if that's what you want to know.

Different cameras have different merits, which you'll learnt once you've used it a bit more.

Waiting on future releases is a fools game. Even Nikon wild guesses( sorry Nikon rumours) would tell you that

Anyway doesn't the 5d MKII have some other problems as well as the well known high noise levels in shadows?

Never seen someone trying to justify their purchase so much in my life. Myself and many thousands of other photographers have absolutely no issue with the AF system or shadow noise.
 
I think your leaning towards the Canon,and anything we say not going to talk you out of it :D

And yes the the Canon will be fine,for what your planings to do.

So would the D7000 :)
 
Was looking into possibly sourcing a D700 from work.I don't think waiting on the next few Nikon cameras would have been stupid as the d300 is due a replacement and the talk of an entry level full frame also sounds nice. Yes the D7000 produces great results and is probably enough for the job but there's always the itch for new gear haha
