5D mk2 or 1Ds mk3

Am missing my full frame. Am mulling over a new 5D mk2 (this will be my third one) or a used 1Ds mk3. I don't need dual card slots but don't need video either. My only concern is old Digic 3 technology over Digic4 of the 5D.
Am i right in thinking that IQ is not much different with these 2 models?
Which would you go for out of these 2 giants?
 
Giant being what I'd focus on... I'd pick the slightly not so giant 5D and even that is on the wrong side of too big and too heavy and too conspicuous for me.
 
Why did you get rid of the 5DII the first twice? Would that be a reason to get rid if it again? Was there something you didn't like?

If it were me I'd get the 1DsIII but that's because I love the 1 series and their weather sealing and 45 AF points. I also use a 1DIV so both that and the 1DsIII have very similar UI.

Plenty of reasons to get 1Ds3 - weathersealing (vs none), good AF, faster response, faster sync speed, nicer to hold, stronger, more durable, higher fps... selling it shortly after would be a bad reason (applies to any camera really).
 
1Ds mk3 for me too, by quite a distance! 5fps, bigger better build and real weather sealed body, 100% veiwfinder, better autofocus and metering, much more life from battery, higher sync speed, twice the shutter life rating, viewfinder shutter and arguably better IQ.

*edit* It might however be a bad buy if theres a replacement on the way shortly as the mkIII is overdue an update!

I had the 5DMkII and moved on to a 1DsIII and think that the 5DII has two advantages over the 1Ds....weight (if it's an issue) and noise/tonal range above Iso 1600 (below 1600, the 1Ds is my preferred option)

Weight does not bother me, In fact i prefer it and most of the shooting will be landscape so will be low iso. I guess from the feedback then the 1ds Mk3 is the way to go.
In response to Neil, I got rid of my others cos i'm a fickle b****r and was shooting more wildlife at the time, Having said that i enjoyed the 5D mk2 for wildlife also. Now i want to get back into landscaping again.
 
High ISO is supposed to be better on the 5dii, but aside from that I can imagine the 1dsiii would be the best. Saying that I'd pick the 1div over the 1dsiii if it was for the benefits of the 1d series like focus etc and that's much newer to the market too. it'll also give you that little bit more reach from your lenses.
 
Having owned both I would go for the 1DS3.In pure iq terms the 1DS3 is much nicer than the 5D2(low iso shooting).Only reason I would choose the 5D2 over the 1DS3 is if the size/weight bothered you or you wanted a better screen on the back.The DS3 screen looks flippin horrible after using more modern screens.
Saying that,I would take the 1D4 over the other 2 cameras any day.Only thing I would have liked in the 1D4 is a built in level and that's being very picky.Awesome IQ and speed all wrapped up in a very nice package.

I have the 1D 4 Gary but not sure if it will cut it as a landscape camera with the 1.3 crop. It's a bit of a struggle with wide angle lens choice and iq must surely be better with the 1ds 3

As a landscape camera many of the advantages of the 1 series are lost. Save money and weight and get a 5DII or even a Sony A850/900. Probably the best resolving landscape DSLR around.

Not so sure, Sony is not an option as i have investment in Canon, Also i think the weather sealing of the 1 series over the 5 series may be more beneficial when the sea spray is flying or up in the wet highlands of scotland. Sounds like i'm answering my own questions here. May have a serious look at the 1Ds mk3.

I see where you are coming from with the wide angle lens choice but to be honest the main reason I moved from full frame was the terrible performance of the Canon offerings on full frame.The 16-35 Mk2 is awful and much better on the 1.3 cropper.The only decent lens I personally used was the Zeiss 21mm but i always wanted wider.At the present time I wouldn't consider going back to full frame without also picking up the 17 TS.I'm playing the continuing waiting game for Canon to introduce a Nikon 14-24 equalling or beating zoom.
Re the 1D4-The new Sigma 12-24mm has just hit the shelves in Japan.If it's as good as some of their other new lenses that could be the wide angle problem finally sorted.
I do see the 1D4 through rose tinted glasses but I find the files better than from any Canon camera that I have ever used-that iccludes just about everything from the 20D upwards.

Cheers, That's an interesting perspective. I read somewhere that the Landscape photographer of the year 2010's Antony Spencer uses a Nikon wide angle zoom on his 5D 2 with an adapter. Couuld be the answer as i do like Nikon glass very much.
Perhaps i should keep the 1D 4 until they bring out the 1D 5 35 mp beastie with full frame and crop all rolled into one. Just a rumour i heard. I doubt Canon would do it as they would be losing half their market by providing the perfect all rounder.

If you are so desperate for Nikon 14-24 and looking for 1Ds3, you may as well get D3X. No filters is too much of an issue for me. Ok, lee adapter is available, but then the cost spirals out of control.

I'm not so sure. I think Canon shot themselves in the foot a bit with the 5D2 as I know some people use it over the 1Ds3 due to its lower price tag and great results. This may (read as wishful thinking) prompt them to finally emalgamate the 2 1 series bodies. Seems to work for Nikon.

But then we have been getting the 1 series in 1 body for the last few years supposedly. I aint holding my breath!!
